Kurt Cobain statue unveiled in his hometown, and it’s kind of terrible

on February 21, 2014, 9:47am

Yesterday, Kurt Cobain’s hometown of Aberdeen, WA celebrated Kurt Cobain Day. The festivities included a live concert and a special appearance from Cobain’s guitar teacher. A statue of the Nirvana legend was also revealed in the town’s museum. That’s a picture of it above.

Here’s another:

Kurt Cobain Statue

As Stereogum points out, local news channel King 5 did a report on the day’s events. As it turns out, not everyone is a fan of Kurt Cobain Day, especially anchor Dennis Bounds, who introduced Cobain not as “Nirvana frontman and newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member,” but rather as “the well known heroin addict who shot himself 20 years ago.” The report itself wasn’t much better, as it included an interview with a random fan and focused way too much on Cobain’s vices than his many contributions. Cobain was “not exactly George Washington,” the reporter so brilliantly noted.

But if you’re in need of a few good chuckles, watch it below.

Personally, I’m more of a fan of Rock it Out! Blog’s recent segment on Kurt Cobain Day, but I am biased.

The pretentiousness in this post makes me want to never read Consequence of Sounds ever again. Get over the fact that the statue isn’t the best or the news team didn’t like him, is it still not a celebration of Kurt’s life? Why focus on the negative so much? Please do get over yourself CoS.

That K5 news report is funny but it’s also very sad reminder that so called ‘sane’ adult newsreporters have such a backward view on drug addiction , drug abuse and mental health. Utter morons.

Hey I have an idea, let’s dig into the unseamly past of all of our established heros and focus on the bad stuff they did. Forget their accomplishments and focus on their everyday failings as human beings. Who needs heroes anyway? With that said, the Kurt of old would have hated this, and the statue is horrible. Exactly what I would expect to come out of a committee decision from small town movers and shakers. If Kurt were alive today though he’d be a 47 year old, possibly ex-junkie who’d been kicked out of his own band and moved on as a solo sad-sack singer on the inevitable down swing of his career. Maybe an older and wiser Kurt would have welcomed his place in the history of the town he’d finally made peace with. We’ll never know. RIP!

I have to believe Kurt would find this to be a hilarious waste and undoubtedly be the first in a long line to vandalize it.

Eh, surprised it wasn’t cut from a stump with a chainsaw…

I feel like he would think this was incredibly stupid.
