OutKast to play Milwaukee’s Summerfest, what’s this mean for Lollapalooza?

on February 26, 2014, 4:08pm

Today, OutKast was confirmed as one of the headliners for Summerfest 2014. Good news for the people of Milwaukee, potentially bad news for all those hoping to see the seminal rap duo at Lollapalooza.

The issue at hand? Lollapalooza’s infamous radius clause, which reportedly limits acts from playing shows within a 300-mile radius of Lollapalooza in the months leading up the festival. The festival has been known to waive its radius clause in the past, but consider this: as a user on the Lollapalooza message board notes, only twice before has a band headlined Summerfest and Lollapalooza in the same year — Weezer did so in 2005 and Wilco in 2006.

One possible scenario is that Lollapalooza promoters booked OutKast for their other festival, Austin City Limits, and opted for native son Kanye West to serve as this year’s rap headliner. Kanye is already confirmed to headline Bonnaroo in June and is also playing Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival in late July. (Last year, Fuji Rock and Lollapalooza shared The Cure and Nine Inch Nails as headliners.) It’s also possible that a competing Chicago festival such as North Coast — which last year booked Wu-Tang Clan to headline — may have wound up nabbing OutKast. Promoters for North Coast did not respond to our request for comment as of this posting.

All that being said, it’s hard to fathom OutKast’s reunion tour not hitting the country’s biggest music festival. We’ll find out one way or another when the lineup is officially revealed in April.

In the meantime, here’s a look at OutKast’s current tour scheduling:

04/11 – Indio, CA @ Coachella Music Festival
04/18 – Indio, CA @ Coachella Music Festival
04/25-27 – Kingston Downs, GA @ CounterPoint
05/02-04 – Tampa, FL @ Big Guava Festival
05/16-18 – Gulf Shores, AL @ Hangout Music Festival
05/23-25 – George, WA @ Sasquatch! Music Festival
06/06-08 – New York, NY @ Governors Ball Music Festival
06/19-22 – Dover, DE @ Firefly Music Festival
07/06 – London, UK @ Wireless Festival
08/03 – Toronto, ON @ OVO Fest
09/04-07 – Isle of Wight, UK @ Bestival

Now that theyre not playing roo and looking like a no for lolla after this, Im guessing that part of the coachella booking/initial reunion announcement had something blocking them from playing another one of the big fests. Id bet they headline north coast..

Lolla type bands that have headlined Summerfest in the past few years:
2013: Violent Femmes – wouldn’t headline Lolla anyway
2013: Fun – played Lolla the previous year
2012: Foo Fighters – headlined Lolla the previous year
2011: Kanye West – Kinda stretching timewise here, but headlined in 2006 and 2008
2011: The Black Keys – played Lolla the previous year
2010: No Lollapalooza type bands headlined
2009: No Doubt headlined, didn’t play Lolla, but didn’t play a lot of festivals
2008: No Lollapalooza type bands
2007: Tool headlined, didn’t play Lolla or a lot of other festivals.
2006: Nine Inch Nails, played Summerfest during the Amphitheater tour, played Tinley Park too, wasn’t really a festival tour.
2006: Wilco – played both
2005: Pixies – played both
2005: Weezer – played both

So you can’t really say that there is a precedent that bands can’t play Summerfest and Lollapalooza. It’s mostly classic rock bands and country singers and the occasional pop star that headline Summerfest. I don’t think Outkast playing Summerfest rules them out of Lollapalooza.

Summerfest gets headliners of ALL genres, thats what makes it one of the best.. if you look at all the stages it’s really diverse

I think it’s a good bet that Outkast will be at North Coast (Big Boi performed in 2012). They’re playing Big Guava fest, which is also a relatively smaller festival, so I don’t think NCMF is out of the question.

Word. I’m surprised that COS would even want OutKast when Kanye is possibly playing. I thougt the headline would be, Outkast not to head Lolla! (We got Yezzy Bitches!!!!)

they announced 40 festival shows right? and only 10-11 have been announced. they’re gonna have to play some double-booked weekends and probably step on some geographical toes eventually? but it sounds like more of a 50/50 btwn kanye & kast now. hmm
