Brooklyn musician Grey Gersten, whose resume includes work with TV on the Radio and John Zorn, will release his debut self-titled EP as ETERNAL LIPS on February 25th via New Mirage Records. In anticipation, it’s streaming in full below.
According to a press release, the five-track EP is Gersten’s attempt at establishing “outsider pop,” adding that he “brings his years of experience working in and around NYC’s experimental rock scene to the process of making pop music, resulting in music that is not only vibrant but wonderfully accessible as well. This is Gersten exploring the conventions and mystical aspects of pop music in a totally honest and non-ironic way.”
The resulting effort is one that presents tried and true pop archetypes in new and exciting configurations. “Dream Hesitate” sees Gersten and Sharon Van Etten take the ’50s boy-girl duet into outer space, harmonizing over a mix of spacey synths and waves of warm ambient echoes. Though Kyp Malone’s vocal contributions to “Voice” lend more of an abstract feel, the song maintains heart and soul with futuristic funk grooves. Even “Wreck”, which takes a sudden dive toward the realm of zany krautrock, is a playful and cheery anthem.
By existing outside of genre norms, the EP helps make pop music, with all its warm feelings and endless connective potential, feel totally brand new.
