February 9th marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. To help celebrate, the current occupant of the Ed Sullivan Theater, David Letterman, is hosting a week full of Beatles-inspired performances.
Monday gave us “And I Love Her”, as performed by Broken Bells and Ringo Starr, Tuesday featured Sting taking on “Drive My Car”, and Wednesday had Lenny Kravitz tackling “Get Back”. Last night, The Flaming Lips — who have been known to do a Beatles cover or two — teamed up with John Lennon’s son, Sean to perform “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”, off their 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. As you’d expect, the performance featured Wayne Coyne’s usual bit of weirdness, as he surrounded himself with fiber optic tubing, wore wings, and at, one point, was showered in confetti. Tomorrow, Lauryn Hill helps to close out Letterman’s Beatles week. The performance marks the singer’s first TV appearance in three years.
