Watch: Pussy Riot’s video for “Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland”

on February 20, 2014, 9:59am

Despite countless attempts by the government, including the use of false detention and physical assaults, the members of Pussy Riot maintain a strong presence at the Sochi Olympics. Earlier today, when a local hotel inexplicably canceled their press conference, the collective took to the city streets, debuting a performance video for the activist anthem “Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland”.

The song itself is meant as a denouncement of the country’s treatment of political prisoners, which is especially visceral and immediate over pristine images of the state-sponsored event and footage of the recent Cossack whippings. More than just cathartic, the video serves to subvert and counter the government’s efforts with the Olympics. (Without coming out directly, Putin and many officials have hoped to use the Olympics to rejuvenate the country’s tarnished global image). With little more than ski masks and a whole lot chutzpah, Pussy Riot once again display true, unwaivering resiliency. Watch it below.

In related news, a post on Pussy Riot’s website is calling for protesters to show up to a Moscow court on Friday morning. There, the verdict will be read for those protesters arrested following the May 6th, 2012 anti-Putin demonstration. “Freedom to all political prisoners of the May 6 case,” reads a statement. “To the [jailed] environmentalist Yevgeny Vitishko and all other political prisoners!”

I don’t get why people hate on this. These girls are just trying to change things by protesting. That doesn’t make them “idiots”. The members of Pussy Riot are doing nothing wrong as far as I know. Also the song was pretty great. :))

Your website encouraging this is hilarious. The title should read “Idiot’s stage another useless grab for attention”. Because they attempt at music during this nonsense, does that qualify this as a music headline? Or is it because the average hipster tool in university with an opinion and no idea why will love this kind of stupidity? Maybe if they stopped constantly breaking laws and going out of their way to make their country look like a joke they wouldn’t end up having to protest about prison conditions for idiots that go out of their way to be idiots. It’s a never ending cycle of stupidity fueled by publicity, congrats on contributing to that.
