Listen: De La Soul’s new song “Dilla Plugged In”

on March 04, 2014, 4:44pm

Last month,  De La Soul celebrated the 25th anniversary of their debut record 3 Feet High and Rising by making their entire catalog available for free download. Today, they continue the celebration by unveiling “Dilla Plugged In”, a new track that pairs reworked lines form 3 Feet High’s “Plug Tunin” with production from the late, great J Dilla.

While it’s technically a new song, De La Soul’s rhymes (“Vocalized letter hold the quench of your thirst/This is for the rhythm, the cause is unknown”) maintain the original’s unassuming and idiosyncratic charm. It’s a kind of playfulness that’s in turn enhanced by Dilla’s cheerful blend of snappy drum machines and vaguely classical piano.

Listen in below:

“Dilla Plugged In” will be included on the forthcoming Smell the D.A.I.S.Y. mixtape, which features assorted Dilla beats and new and reworked De La Soul verses. Later this year, the trio will release Premiem Soul on the Rocks, a six-song EP featuring production from DJ Premier and Pete Rock, followed by their new studio album titled You’re Welcome.
