Listen: Frank Ocean, The Clash, and Diplo’s collaborative track “Hero”

on March 10, 2014, 9:35am

The latest installment in Converse’s long-running Three Artists, One Song series is yet another one for the books: R&B singer Frank Ocean, super producer Diplo, and The Clash’s own Mick Jones and Paul Simonon have joined forces for a song called “Hero”.  Not surprisingly, the song exists at the intersection between a sauntering ’60s soul ballad and a more methodical Clash jam, with Ocean’s heartfelt croon layered over Diplo’s pastiche of dub and electronic samples and the raucous guitar noise of Jones and Simonon. The real highlight, however, is the surprise inclusion of a children’s choir, providing the song with an extra layer of intimacy. Listen below.

Aside from the uniqueness of the collaboration, it marks the first time Jones and Simonon have worked together since touring with Gorillaz in support of 2010′s Plastic Beach. It also serves as Frank Ocean’s first new song in two years.

Diplo commented on the epic collaboration:

The Clash were always teachers to me, even before I shared a studio with Paul and Mick. Their musical anarchy and constant attitude to disregard rules and forge their own path was inspirational to me. They meant death to genres, music and message above everything. Frank lives by the same creed in being married to his vision and seeing it through at any cost. We had to challenge each other to make something that we hope no one could expect and Converse valued everyone’s artistic freedom to let us shine throughout the past few months to make this thing happen.
