Because they’re E! , the go-to celebrity television network has called upon a handful of musicians to cover Robert Palmer’s classic 1988 song “Simply Irresistible” for their “Live from the Red Carpet” Academy Awards coverage. Among the contributing artists are funky soul singer Janelle Monáe and British goth-pop star Charli XCX.
Monáe’s version is a slick number that gives a 2014 sheen to the ’80s pop hit. She brings her typical brand of high energy by focusing on the screeching synths and guitars, and reusing the refrain “She’s so fine, there’s no telling where my money went” throughout the entire song.
Charli, on the other hand, pumped some adrenaline into the track, turning it into a speedy rock number. Full of attitude and crashing cymbals, it’s a heavier, hyperactive rendition that remains just as fun as the original.
Fitz and the Tantrums and Swedish rockers The Royal Concept also contributed their takes on Palmer’s smash, and you can hear those during the “Live from the Red Carpet” pre-show. Below, check out the song’s unforgettable video.
