Last year, it was reported that Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams had formed a super group with Johnny Marr, David Stewart (Eurythmics, SuperHeavy), and Mike Einziger (Incubus) to score The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Whereas the score is akin to the Sinister 6, the official soundtrack’s more like the the Sinister 12 (it’s a comic reference; go Google it), featuring contributions from a solo Pharrell, the Neighbourhood, LIZ, and Phosphorescent. What’s more, Kendrick Lamar and Alicia Keys teamed up for a new collaboration called “It’s On Again”.
Rather than blending both Keys and Lamar together, the Pharrell-produced single splits them into distinct parts. Keys harmonizes over a groovy concoction of disco strings and classical piano, turning the rallying cry of “it’s on again” into an inspirational anthem. While he shows up for a mere 40-some seconds, Lamar serves as the song’s core of aggression, continuing his interest in crossover appeal by blasting visceral rhymes and motivational catchphrases over a barrage of heavy metal guitars. It may seem a little disjointed, but the song readily achieves a singular goal:
it makes you want to see Spider-Man it fires you up to tackle the rest of your workday and rip its throat out.
