In his review of the excellent MCII, our own Michael Roffman heralded Mikal Cronin’s ongoing musical expansion. Following his more straightforward debut, the Los Angeles garage rocker utilized keys and strings to help round out his rootsy and rollicking sound. Cronin continues to tinker with similarly foreign elements for the release of a new standalone single entitled “Soul in Motion”.
Here, looped drum machine and bits of haggard organ add texture to the playful acoustic romp. If anything, though, those are just minor additions, musical red herrings if you will, as Cronin abruptly flips the switch and delivers a sweltering cannon-shot of garage-rock fuzz. He may eventually eschew that fresh sense of nuance in favor of good ol’ fashioned noise and intensity, but it just proves Cronin’s making use of whatever tools necessary to keep things joyfully unpredictable.
