It’s been a long time coming, but today we get our first look at André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix in the forthcoming biopic All Is By My Side. With the film set to premiere at South by Southwest next week, a teaser video has made its way online. In it, we see Hendrix speaking with Linda Keith (played by Imogen Poots), the woman who first brought him to London, leading to his realization of rock stardom.

Update: Watch a second clip in which Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey (Burn Gorman) tries to convince him to move to London (via Rolling Stone).

Directed by Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave), the film documents Hendrix’s formative years in 1966-1967 when he went from being a backup guitarist in New York City to a guitar god following his move to London. The story culminates with his appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

“Setting The Record Straight” the seconds video clip portrays Jimi’s manager Chas Chandler who had just quit The Animals not Michael Jeffery.

According to a review on IMDB, “This film is offensive racist garbage. There are only three Black characters in the film other than Hendrix but each one is hostile and manipulative (especially the women). Jimi Hendrix is rescued from obscurity by a White woman whose only qualification is that she’s sleeping with Keith Richards. According to this film, if it wasn’t for her and other magical White folks, Jimi Hendrix would have been nothing.

Andre 3000 is waaaaaaay too old and he’s not an actor. Between his lack of acting ability and the absurd script, Hendrix comes across as incoherent to the point where he appears to be borderline autistic.”

Just saying.
