Following a tragic series of events at last year’s festival, Electric Zoo will return to New York City’s Randalls Island in 2014 with increased security and medical procedures.
Last year’s festival saw the death of two attendees from drug overdoses, while another was sexually assaulted. What’s more, a total of 31 people were arrested during the festival weekend for offenses including drug possession and intent to distribute, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Due to these incidents, the festival’s third and final day was canceled.
In response, festival organizers have “added numerous security, medical and messaging protocols aimed at providing fans the safest possible experience,” according to a press release. Among them are an increase in undercover police officers, the addition of drug-sniffing canines, and background checks for all on-site vendors and employees. In addition, the festival will provide electrolytes at little or no cost to concertgoers, offer free unlimited water, and shorten the length of daily sets.
Electric Zoo will take place over Labor Day weekend (August 29th – 31st). A full lineup and ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
