Turns out we were partially right in our predictions for Coachella Weekend Two. The Replacements were joined on-stage by a special guest, but it wasn’t Lorde. Rather, Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson welcomed Green Day frontman Bille Joe Armstrong.
As Slicing Up Eyeballs points out, Armstrong played guitar for most of The Replacements’ Friday night set. He appeared to fill in for Westerberg, who spent most of the performance sitting on a couch (yes, a couch), suffering from an ailing back.
Surprisingly, the set was better received and much more attended than the band’s weekend one set, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The setlist included performances of “I’m In Trouble”, “Kiss Me on the Bus”, “Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out”, “I Don’t Know”, and “IOU”, among other songs. Below, watch fan-shot footage of the band performing “IOU”.

Armstrong has long expressed admiration for The Replacements and even interviewed Westerberg forSPIN in 2010.
