Stagnant Pools announce new album, Geist, stream “Intentions”

on April 03, 2014, 11:00am

Indiana noise-rock duo Stagnant Pools will release their sophomore album, Geist, on June 10th via Polyvinyl Records. After spending much of the last two years touring in support of 2012′s excellent Temporary Room, brothers Bryan (guitar/vocals) and Douglass Enas (drums) began work on the album this past fall at their family’s home in Bloomington. According to a press release, “inspiration came in bursts — sometimes five demos would be recorded in an afternoon, sometimes months would pass without playing a note.”

Hoping to finish the album and get back on the road (touring is a “concrete way of knowing that you are in forward motion,” adds Douglass Enas), they set up shop this past January at the Chicago studio of Hum frontman Matt Talbott. There, in just four days, they recorded and mastered the record live to tape. The resulting 10-track collection sees the siblings Enas “refine and expand on a shoegaze-meets-noise pop sound that has previously drawn comparisons to Joy Divison, Sonic Youth, and The Jesus and Mary Chain.”

As our first taste of Geist, Stagnant Pools have unveiled lead single “Intentions”. From the first listen, it’s clear the pair have gotten much louder, infusing their one-two punch of droning guitars and rapid-fire drums with even more fuzz and distortion. Still, amid all that extra aural chaos, there’s something more going on: Bryan Enas’s vocals are now in a starring role, sounding more brooding and intense than ever before, while serving as an emotional anchor in a tumultuous sea of endless clamor. Whoever said endless dissonance can’t have a little heat and soul?

Listen in below.

04. Intentions

06. Ever So

One of the better bands to emerge in quite awhile. And although I prefer the vocal levels of “Temporary Room” a bit more, “Geist” is definitely noteworthy.

Somewhere around Oct. 2011 we saw Stagnant Pools supporting Maximo Park and they blew me away. Thanks for posting a new song, really hoping they continue to excite.
