Yesterday, the Internet caught wind of an unreleased copy of Aphex Twin’s 1994 album Caustic Window being sold on the website Discogs for $13,500. In the hours that followed, electronic music forum We Are The Music Makers struck a deal with the owner of the record, negotiating the price down to $8,368 and making a limited amount of copies available digitally through Kickstarter, all of which was done with the approval of Richard David James, as Pitchfork points out.
500 copies of the album will be available through Kickstarter at the price of $16. Once the allotment is sold out, the physical record will be auctioned on eBay. The proceeds from the eBay sale will be split evenly between Rephlex Records and Aphex Twin, the people who pay into the Kickstarter, and a charity. Click here for more info.
Update: The Kickstarter is now live.
