Listen to The Black Keys prank call record labels

on May 02, 2014, 1:10pm

Yesterday, The Black Keys slipped into sweaty, cheap suits, hilariously (and accurately) playing the role of two televangelists in their video for “Fever”. Today, we get another dose of the duo’s shenanigans with a five-minute recording of prank calls, wherein they pitch their music to a bunch of record label execs.

You see, when Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney aren’t selling out arenas playing blues rock, they’re trying to make it in the business as Quartzazium, “a New Age artist from Rhode Island”. Complete with eerie music straight out of a Vincent Price flick and a lot of muffled giggling, the audio clip is LOL-worthy because: 1) Auerbach and Carney sound like a bunch of fun nerds (“We would like you to take a helicopter and come see us.”) and 2) le sigh, there’s probably artists out there who still think this is the right way to get attention. As a side note: Quartzazium, you are welcomed to play my birthday party later this month. Listen to the full recording below.

Meanwhile, in case New Age isn’t your thing, The Black Keys’ new album, Turn Blue, arrives May 13th via Nonesuch Records.
