Morrissey threatens to not perform tonight, demands venue cancel other show

on May 08, 2014, 5:58pm

Morrissey’s previous North American tours were derailed due to an array of health issues. Now, just two days into his latest jaunt, he’s found himself facing an entirely different obstacle: other bands.

Moz is due to play The Observatory in Santa Ana, CA this evening. Inside the venue is a second music space, dubbed The Constellation Room, where We Are Scientists and PAWS are scheduled to perform. According to PAWS’ Facebook page, Morrissey made an attempt to have their show canceled, “because he is playing in another room in the same venue and wishes for their to be no other artists performing in his vicinity.”

Update – Friday, 5:30am PT: Paws has issued a detailed account of last night’s events. Read it here.

Update – Thursday, 5:00pm PT: PAWS has removed their Facebook post. According to the band’s publicist, the band will, in fact, perform tonight as originally planned.

Meanwhile, We Are Scientists said they’ve changed their set times to accommodate Morrissey’s “bedtime.” They expanded on the day’s events in an issued statement:

Chris from W.A.S. here. Happy to confirm that PAWS’ are back on. When it became apparent that Morrissey’s set was going to overlap with the WAS/PAWS bill, everybody really did agree that couldn’t work — even though the two venues are separated by a reasonably thick wall, Moz fans wouldn’t have been able to hear a lick of what they’d paid to see. Both bands on our bill play at nuclear volume, triumphant volume, and it goes right through walls. Putting on the two shows simultaneously would be like screening a mumblecore film and a Michael Bay movie in theaters divided by a cotton bed sheet. So we’ve moved the WAS/PAWS show a little later, which will probably come as a nice surprise to our fans, many of whom have had to set their alarms especially early this afternoon in order to make the show.

Read the entirety of PAWS’ original posting below:

Morrissey is currently trying to have our slot at tonights show in Santa Ana, California cancelled because he is playing in another room in the same venue and wishes for their to be no other artists performing in his vicinity.

This is an unbelievable act of complete and utter selfishness that should not be tolerated. This rich, has-been, ego maniac acting like a baby throwing toys from a pram. To satisfy his little power hungry brain. A complete disregard for others and a baffling lack of support/respect for young, hard working musicians.

People like this, with attitudes like this displays a classic example of why the music industry is still awash with disgusting garbage that should by now have been snuffed out. Pedestals, self righteous entitlement, disrespect and “competition”. Geez. It’s not like we’ve come all the way from Scotland to play for nothin’…

I’m just going to leave this photo and sentiment with you and we’ll report back with developments. We won’t go out without a fight!

What do you all think?

Who are these no name flash in the pan hipster douchebags? Morrissey is a fookin legend. We’ll see where your fan base is in 30 years

May 9, 2014 at 5:48 pm

While it’s fun to write mischievous polarized articles and to post partisan points of view…
“We’ve booked two rock bands on the same night. They will almost certainly be able to hear each other at some point.”
“Oh. That’s no good for the audiences or the artists is it? I’m not putting up with that.”
“Righto. We’ll schedule the other band to play a bit later.”

Let’s have a lovely ill-informed shitstorm about it.

Good the internet, isn’t it?

He’s Morrissey, you’re who? Oh, I’m sorry, you’re WAS, or PAWS, or whoever…

May 9, 2014 at 5:03 pm

Uh, He’s Morrissey. You’re who? Oh, PAWS/WAS. Get over your non-selves.

I can’t waste time typing a response to whoever “penned” the origjnal response. My thumbs suck. I would like to meet you and discuss the feasibility of two bands playing k the same room…same time.

May 9, 2014 at 2:51 am

Been here many many times. If artistic integrity is what you want… Schedule two shows in LA. The observatory is an amazing venue… But this is sort of a classic scenario in the OC promoters book… Even top notch talent gets treated with the same broad strokes of crust and hardcore bands and everyone else that’s slamming through the doors most nights.
This used to be a punk and hardcore venue called The Galaxy, and was massively retro-fitted a few years back. I love what they have done with the place, amazing sound, but the people pulling the strings around here are pretty much the same (admittedly, these are talented LA promoters with connections vs. the old Galaxy group). Although it was a rad place, the Galaxy had a rep. Sometimes you get the feeling that not a terrible lot has changed when you have to talk to one of the house geniuses at will call about a guest list, etc. I’ll leave it at that.

Don’t cry too hard over your tour rider Morrissey, everyone else just sucks it up here, and they’ve lived to tell about it… maybe even had a damn good time,

May 9, 2014 at 1:22 am

Been to the observatory many times and you can’t hear the bands playing in the constellation from the main room where morrisseys playing.

May 8, 2014 at 11:58 pm

Have heard of Morrissey. Have not heard of PAWS. Morrissey is a has-been? Better than a never-will-be…

May 9, 2014 at 12:41 am

PAWS are awesome. Yeah they come off a bit douchey, but not as much as Morrissey.

…who?!?!… We Are Scientists? PAWS?!??…no chance. Morrissey does whatever he wants–his lunatic fans will level the place at his beckon. The bookers of the venue shouldn’t be working.

May 8, 2014 at 11:12 pm

Its not like Moz will play for more than 63 minutes anyways….

May 8, 2014 at 10:27 pm

morssiey such a fuckin little prick, w.a.s where book way before morssiey was and for moz to kick them out “the day of the show” is a bitch things to do. lost a lot of respect for moz.

May 8, 2014 at 9:47 pm

At least Morrissey can express himself in complete sentences, about tonight’s show, egomania, power-hungry musicians, or anything else.

May 8, 2014 at 9:17 pm

There, their, and they’re, niggers.

May 9, 2014 at 4:42 am

Regardless of the grammatical errors, go fuck yourself you racist problem prick

May 9, 2014 at 4:46 am

Ignore the word “problem” in my previous reply. Phone accidently add it.

Morrissey sucks. I bet he already has a whiney song called “Why do I have to share the same square mile with other artists, I’m the only artist in the universe… dai dee dai dee dai dee dum”

May 8, 2014 at 8:58 pm

PAWS certainly come off as assholes in their statement. Seriously, sound issues are a concern. And WAS confirmed that and handled it well. PAWS sound like a bunch of twats.

Paws are a small band from abroad and a last minute cancellation at the behest of what is theoretically a third party could totally fuck up the economics of their tour. Sure, the venue should have better soundproofing between rooms but as things stood at the time their comments are justifiable from my point of view.
It’s good that something which suited everybody was worked out in the end.

Any artist that threatens to cancel a show for a reason like this is an asshole. Plain and simple. I don’t care who it is.

May 8, 2014 at 8:37 pm

I love Morrissey and his music is very dear to me. But this is pathetic, cmon Mozzer grow up! Just have the bands open for you, problem solved

May 8, 2014 at 8:26 pm

Every single tortabilly/dumb bitch will be butthurt about these comments. The dude needs to get the fuck over himself and quit. Who knew yawning and crying like a bitch would make you look like a mook.

May 8, 2014 at 8:15 pm

Wonder why they removed the post? Grabbed headlines and had done with it?

May 8, 2014 at 8:12 pm

Who the fuck are you? Morrissey still sells out venues even when he cancels shows.

May 9, 2014 at 1:07 am

Yup, because a band having a bigger fanbase is totally a valid argument on why another band from overseas should have their show canceled. Get your head out of your ass.

The fact that people would pay to see Morrissey in the first place is what’s wrong with the music industry.

May 8, 2014 at 7:59 pm

Morrissey is a total prick. I don’t get why anyone likes his crappy music, but each to their own. What really sucks is that he will cancel a show that his fans (don’t know why he has any) have paid for and were looking forward to seeing because the venue has 2 spaces. Maybe this shit eater should check the venue first if he does not like the setup.

Note that the headline says “allegedly.” Kudos to COS for recognizing the click-bait appeal of Morrissey. And right on cue, the guttural whinging of Morrissey haters. This is why 99.9% articles about Moz are total rubbish.

May 8, 2014 at 7:24 pm

Placing the blame on the artists is precisely the wrong track to take, and unfortunately the media (this blog included) are doing a great job of framing the situation as just that. why are you pitting artists against each other when it’s the venue and promoter’s fault for scheduling two concurrent shows in a venue that is not adequately soundproofed to be a multi-room space? ultimately it comes down to greed and mismanagement on the part of the venue, not Morrissey (or likely his management/agent) or that other indie band.

Morrisey sold this show out within minutes. The Observatory is a smaller venue with two dft rooms where bands can play. There can be music heard (and fans cheering) from the other room sometimes when both rooms are rocking. The other room probably shouldn’t have been booked with gigs outside of Morrissey’s act in the first place. And this other band’s comments written in anger are way over the top (referring to snuffing him out?!). Their post could not have helped things. Morrissey is Morrissey. Love him or not. He’s an artist who has been around a long time, has a strong fan base, and has earned respect. Let the man have the gig set up the way he wants it set up. I paid to see him tonight too.

May 8, 2014 at 7:08 pm

Morrissey is a whiney douschebag, and he always has been. What an overrated prick.

May 8, 2014 at 7:07 pm

I totally agree with Morrissey! We paid a lot of money to see his show tonight and I don’t want to hear another band playing at the same time! I was there a few weeks ago when “Crosses” was playing and it was very distracting to hear the other band in the “Constellation” room. It’s ghetto and annoying to hear one band play while you are trying to listen to another. This isn’t Morrissey’s fault, this is the fault of the venue booking 2 bands to play simultaneously. They do not provide enough sound proofing to eliminate the noise spilling from the smaller room to the larger venue.

We are very excited to see Morrissey play tonight (as we are every time we see him perform). He is AMAZING and one of the best live shows out there. These other bands should realize that he is an icon. Bashing him for not wanting to play while another band is performing is nothing to scoff at. It’s super annoying for the guests to hear both bands at once. Someone said that Morrissey is being “Selfish”…this is ridiculous!! The band that is bitching is being selfish. Hello?! This is Morrissey and half of the people at the venue tonight spent over $250 bucks to see this guy play. These two other bands should stop whining and reschedule during another night when someone as iconic as Morrissey is not booked.

May 8, 2014 at 7:23 pm

The other bands are touring acts and it’s not exactly that easy to just “reschedule.” This really falls on the venue. For the record, been to over a dozen shows at this place and have never heard any bleed between the 2 rooms.

May 8, 2014 at 10:22 pm

This is complete BS. You have been standing in the hallway then. Once you are in the main stage area, you can’t hear the other room because the sound is louder since it’s the main room. I was just there Saturday and while we could hear the main room, you couldn’t hear the bands in the Constellation Room while in the main. And our bands had horns!

May 8, 2014 at 6:50 pm

see normally, It wouldn’t matter if it was just another band. But this is Morrisey and simple economics were talking about. If I was the owner, and if morrisey alone brings over X amount of revenue then other two bands combined. It’s a no brainier. Now enthics wise, yeah it’s a shitty thing to do but he is a sort of an icon. and this coming from someone who doesn’t even listen to him nor the smiths.

May 8, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Fuck this asshole. He shouldn’t even be allowed to play in California again if this is how he treats other artists. It still bogels my mind that people even go to see this self-centered piece of shit.

May 8, 2014 at 6:06 pm

what a tosser
