Reunited shoegaze outfit Slowdive hit the stage for the first time in 20 years at London’s Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen on Sunday night. The Neal Halstead-led outfit was originally set to make their live comeback show at London’s Village Underground on Monday night, but appeared as surprise headliners for a gig celebrating the 10th birthday of shoegaze label Sonic Cathedral.

The band performed a 13-song set comprised heavily of cuts from their first two albums, 1991’s Just for a Day and 1993’s Souvlaki, as well as the live debut of “Crazy For You” and “Blue Skied an’ Clear” from their third and final album, 1995’s Pygmalion. They also performed their cover of Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair” live for the first time. Check out the full setlist and a few fan-shot videos below.

The Null Device has a short live review of their gig:

Finally, after a few roadies placed the boards of guitar pedals on the stage, Slowdive went on, and started their set with their eponymous song, which was followed up Avalyn. Most of the set was comprised of songs from their EPs and Souvlaki, with one track (Catch The Breeze) from their debut album and two (Blue Skied An’ Clear and Crazy For You) from Pygmalion. Their take on Crazy For You was one of the big surprises of the set; the original is a languid, evanescent number, drifting in and out as if made of gossamer. Their live version was a faster and more intense version, propelled by waves of processed guitars and driving percussion. It was, in a sense, as if Souvlaki-era Slowdive were playing a cover of Pygmalion-era Slowdive and adding their own interpretation to it. (And, in a sense, they were; Pygmalion was, in some ways, a work in progress; the band were fatally dropped by their label before they could play it live. Now, two decades on, they’ve seamlessly picked up where they left off.)

  • Sadly, Rachel’s mic wasn’t working right and the mic on Simon’s kick bass drum didn’t sound like it was working much at all. But no big deal! Could just be the videos. + So many more shows to come and this was AMAZING to see!
