Smashing Pumpkins’ new album is “the best record Billy Corgan’s ever written”

If Tommy Lee is to be believed, and why shouldn’t he (?), Billy Corgan is about to deliver “the best record he’s ever written.” Lee, who is drumming on Smashing Pumpkins’ forthcoming LP Monuments To An Elegy, spoke to Billboard about the recording process. He added, “These are like epic, goose-bump songs. It sounds like the first couple of Smashing Pumpkins records. I was fucking blown away.”

Lee said he’s already recorded demos with Corgan in Los Angeles and plans to return to the studio in a few weeks to track the songs. Corgan previously said he expects the album, along with a second Pumpkins LP called Day For Night, to be released in 2015. He described the albums’ sound by saying, “think: ‘guitars, guitars, guitars, and more guitars;’ but more so on the epic side of things than say, grossly metallic.”

If Tommy Lee is right and I end up hearing the best-of-Billy qualities in the new music, I’m sure I’ll cry like a baby until I fall asleep. All will be right with the world. We have waited so long.

Tommy Lee might be a good drummer…but come on, this is just marketing talk.
I do like Billy Corgan, but considering what he has been writing for the last decade, I can’t imagine the new album being better than Siamese or Mellon Collie.

One thing that gets lost amid all the other stuff surrounding Tommy Lee is the fact that he is actually a great drummer. Go back and listen to his stuff with Motley Crue, he is an amazing drummer in terms of locking into the groove, and I think his style could mesh well with Billy Corgan’s bombastic guitars.
