Last week, we kicked off our monthly tournament in search of the Greatest Drummer of All Time. Almost immediately the race was on with thousands supporting Neil Peart, dozens wondering why Ringo Starr was included, and too many not realizing these choices were all reader-submitted. Needless to say, it was a carnival of oddities at hand.

Now that we’re into the second round of four, things are going to get dicey. Neil Peart vs. Keith Moon? Good luck there. Dave Grohl against Mike Portnoy? The talents of Buddy Rich paired alongside John Bonham? Copeland and Carey?! Just thinking about this next round is making our heads spin.

drummers round 2

So, take the next minute, hour, day, or week to think it over. Remember, we have two more rounds after this, and they’ll only get harder. (Could you imagine if it comes down to Peart vs. Bonham? Christ.) Soon enough, we’ll finally know which guy with the sticks reigns supreme. As we previously mentioned, we encourage a discussion in the comments below, but please be civil.

Don’t forget: The voting booth is on the last page.

Where’s Carter Beauford from Dave Matthew’s Band? Dave Grohl? Seriously?

Only stating a FACT here but this is all based on OPINION. All this hate towards Dave Ghol being on this list. Are there more technically skilled drummers out there? Sure! cough DANNY cough, but the point is who people THINk is the best drummer in the world is. Of course some may be misinformed or completely lacking in knowledge of who he is being compared to here, but Dave Grohl is (in my opinion) a bad ass, mother-fucking drummer. Probably more notable for his overall musicianship, but it does make sense to me why he is on this list. My vote does go to Danny though. MANY props for Buddy Rich, but Danny made me weep with his fantasticness recently with his solo and buddy only made me tear up with his..

I wouldn’t mind seeing you kick this fast with only one foot.

HAHAHA. Dave Matthews band. Are you still in college bro? With Birkenstocks and lite beer in a solo cup? Do you drive a Subaru? Do you swear there’s “no good music nowadays?” HAHA. good one.

A large chunk of talented of musicians consider Carter Beauford of DMB to be one of the better drummers on the planet. Even people with your bro stereotype mentality generally at least say, “yeah but Carter is dope.” So stop being a d-bag.

What the fuck happened to Ginger Baker, or Charlie Watts? This poll is rigged.

Old school – Neal Peart
New school – Danny Carrey.
Then, flip a coin.

How do you figure that Neil Peart is “old school.” He is constantly evolving, learning new techniques, learning old tribal techniques. He isn’t one to just show up and pound out crap, plus he’s the lyricist too. I’ve seen Rush 11 times and the drum solos got progressively more intense than the last one. There are a LOT of drummers that could/should have been on the list, but it is opinion based and these are the ones that were voted for the most frequently. Sorry if you don’t agree. I do agree with Neil Peart being on the list and I certainly hope he wins.

I can only imagine the submission of Dave Grohl went something like this, “hmm greatest drummer? OMG what’s the name of that cute guy in Foo Fighters… oh yeah Dave Grohl, wait – he was in Nirvana too? OMG I tot’s luv me some Daves.”

Yeah Carter Beauford didn’t make round 1? This poll is already messed up. Danny Carey is pretty good though.

Dave Grohl is not even the best drummer from Seattle much less the greatest of all time. polls like this are such a waste of time.

Im fan of all this drummers but the list don´t have the real best´s drummers of all the time. Antonio Sanchez, Horacio El negro Hernandez, Akira Jimbo

Matt Hummel
May 8, 2014 at 3:20 pm

jojo mayer, benny greb, dennis chambers. antonio sanchez, terry bozzio. Oh we’re going for popularity ?!? Rich is hands down the best on the list. As for underrated I would say Ringo, he wasn’t a virtuoso by any means but he played exactly what the song needed

Is technicality or being musical more important?

Danny Carey for me. Best drum atmosphere and sound

John McCormack
May 8, 2014 at 3:12 pm

This definitely should come down to Peart vs Carey in the finals.

ringo starr sucks! where is Carter Beauford? He’s better than at least 3 guys on this list.

Anonymous
May 8, 2014 at 5:18 pm

Ringo Star is the “best” drummer of all time. This is because he always played what was best for the song, which is the drummers job. Buddy rich is the “greatest” because he was so ridiculously physically talented at playing the drums. I’d experiment with telling people at auditions that Ringo is the best drummer I think you’ll find that you get more gigs.

ringo couldn’t even play some of the songs, they had to hire professional recording artists.

Not a single funk, Rn’B, Soul, or New Orleans drummer. All white drummers, huh, CoS?

No offence to any of the guys here. Neil Peart is and forever will be the best. BUT…when he looks up, he sees Buddy Rich. Way down below are all the rest. Do all yourselves a favor. Go to YouTube and see what Buddy Rich can do with a small kit.

Neil Peart…………THE-END!!!

War Priest
May 8, 2014 at 2:53 pm

Should come down to Peart vs. Rich.

Should be Rich by a mile. And that’s even if Cobham, Gadd, and Ereskine (and Coluiata, and Weckl, and anybody else you can think of) had been included.

John LaTemple (@Saxster)
May 8, 2014 at 2:27 pm

Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham and Peter Erskine not even in the running? I can’t take this seriously.

Frank Todd
May 8, 2014 at 3:23 pm

It seems to me this should be called the most popular drummer. Buddy Rich is the only jazz drummer on this list. Amazing artists like Terry Bozzio, Dave Weckl, Zakir Hussain, Vinnie Calaiuta, Chad Wackerman (really, anybody who played with Zappa, honestly), Chester Thompson,……really, the list of percussionists of amazing talent that are conspicuously absent from this…joke…is stunning. You want to really know who’s good? Ask the drummers on the above list (the ones who are still living. Ask Neil Peart who HE thinks the best drummers are–in the past he’s noted people like Omar Hakim and Manu Katche. Ask any of these nominees, and I bet you get answers that don’t appear on this list.

Bonham is the greatest of all time ! Danny Carey for technicality and originality and dave grohl for kick ass energy and the ability to make an any song sound so much better ! I know there’s so many talented drummers out there not on the list but the dude is a legend and he will be remembered as one
