Death Grips continue to keep us on our toes, returning tonight with the first half of a surprise new double album. Entitled niggas on the moon, the eight-track effort apparently features contributions from Björk throughout. (Last year, Death Grips remixed several Björk tracks as part of a Biophilia 12-inch.)
A disjointed and jarring mix of random samples, heaps of bass and drums, and screwball sound collages, the album is a slightly more avant-garde spin on the formula they perfected with LPs like No Love Deep Web.
Listen to niggas on the moon below (or download it here). The second half is dubbed jenny death, while the double LP itself is titled powers that b. It will be released later this year via Harvest/Third Worlds Records.
Update: Björk has issued a statement elaborating on the collaboration: “i am proud to announce my vocals landed on the new death grips album ! i adore death grips and i am thrilled to be their “found object” ! i have been lucky enough to hang and exchange music loves w/ them and witness them grow !! epic : onwards !!”
The band previously hinted at the album back in January, writing, “Starting to record the new Death Grips album right now. Hope to tour alot this summer.” The band launched a similar surprise campaign with last fall’s Government Plates.
