I know this is probably an impossible task, but Britney, girl, you should really delete any unfinished vocal tracks you have laying around. You can’t keep letting this stuff leak. All polished and Auto-Tuned, your voice sounds decent. And with the addition of great production and a solid beat, your voice sometimes sounds even great. (I’m a “Toxic” fan for life!) But really, trash and burn all that other raw material from the “cutting room floor” cause it’s truly unfortunate when we have to hear it. Which is — sigh — exactly the case this week.
An unedited vocal version of “Alien”, a track off Spears’ most recent album Britney Jean, has hit the web and unsurprisingly it’s a real hot mess. Fans are quick to be appalled and defensive (really?), while the song’s producer William Orbit has even spoken up to say that the leak isn’t a “final take”, but a “vocal warm-up”.
“Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly,” Orbit posted on his Facebook. “I’ve heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners. A generous singer will put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. It’s not expected to be a ‘take’.”
Whatever it is, it’s not very good at all, and, for the sake of Brit’s career and, uh, credibility, probably should have been trashed months and months ago. Listen down below — if you dare.
