Britney Spears without Auto-tune is downright scary

I know this is probably an impossible task, but Britney, girl, you should really delete any unfinished vocal tracks you have laying around. You can’t keep letting this stuff leak. All polished and Auto-Tuned, your voice sounds decent. And with the addition of great production and a solid beat, your voice sometimes sounds even great. (I’m a “Toxic” fan for life!) But really, trash and burn all that other raw material from the “cutting room floor” cause it’s truly unfortunate when we have to hear it. Which is — sigh — exactly the case this week.

An unedited vocal version of “Alien”, a track off Spears’ most recent album Britney Jean, has hit the web and unsurprisingly it’s a real hot mess. Fans are quick to be appalled and defensive (really?), while the song’s producer William Orbit has even spoken up to say that the leak isn’t a “final take”, but a “vocal warm-up”.

“Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly,” Orbit posted on his Facebook. “I’ve heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners. A generous singer will put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. It’s not expected to be a ‘take’.”

Whatever it is, it’s not very good at all, and, for the sake of Brit’s career and, uh, credibility, probably should have been trashed months and months ago. Listen down below — if you dare.

I listened to the final version that was released: same vocal track as what was heard before auto-tune. If you listen to the released track, you’ll hear the performance artifacts, as well as all the Auto-tune artifacts. Welcome to the reality of what most pop music is today: image over substance. w ;-)/anothercultand

As a vocalist, I have never sounded that flat and strained while warming up and a professional should NEVER sound like that, even though not warmed up. But, I’m not surprised by any means.

As if vocalists never deliver poor performances, and in the relaxed environment of a studio, just getting warmed up, and finding the sweet spot when singing with a condenser mic. And a good amount of those notes aren’t easy at all. And she likely hasn’t had a lot of practice with the song, where as when you go on tour you’ve drilled the fuck out of it and your muscle memory is all there. She’s feeling out the song and I’m sure nailed it on later takes. It sounds funny sure at some parts, but really not a big deal at all.

She brings in revenue from her ‘music’ & performances and she does what she loves to do. She’s doing far better than I, you go Britney girl! ;)

I’m not sure why people are so surprised by this. She’s a product of the industry – she’s a commodity. You’re not buying a good voice, you’re buying an overproduced brand.

Wow. That was terrible. :-( I’m sure the miracle of the digital studio can polish up that turd.
