Pink Floyd to release new album The Endless River in October

on July 05, 2014, 2:52pm

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s fourteenth and final album, Division Bell. Beyond a deluxe reissue, David Gilmour apparently plans to mark the occasion with a brand new LP entitled The Endless River, which will be released in October.

The news was revealed by Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, on Twitter. Samson added that the album is based on 1994 sessions with Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright.

Singer Durga McBroom-Hudson, who toured with Pink Floyd throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, revealed further details on her Facebook page. “The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled ‘The Big Spliff’ that [Pink Floyd drummer] Nick Mason spoke about),” she explained. “Which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it. But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That’s the song you see being worked on in the photo.” She also added that the album consists entirely of “unreleased songs.”

It’s unclear whether Pink Floyd’s other principal member, Roger Waters, contributed to the album. He last appeared on the band’s 1983 record, The Final Cut, before departing to focus entirely on his solo career.

Update: According to UK newspaper The Sun, Waters is not involved in the project. Also, the band has no plans to tour in support of the release.

Update #2: Pink Floyd have formally confirmed the album’s release on their website.

Last fall, it was revealed that Gilmour was working on a new solo album, his first since 2006. At the moment, it’s also unclear how plans for the new Pink Floyd album will impact this release.

Let me jump in here real quick. Pink Floyd has sold in excess of 250 million records known to date. They are only out performed by two other rock band the beatles and zepplin. This in its own right is a huge achievment. Today in 2014 The Dark Side Of The Moon sells between 7000 and 10000 copies daily world wide. This 40 years after its release. Not only were Pink Floyd masters in the composition of their music they where leaders and pioneers on almost every aspect of live music productions, touring, album art, creativity etc. To release a album 20 years on does seem odd, but its a honour to Rick and his legacy. Pink Floyd will always be one of the greatest bands of our time

why?

Apparently due to a momentary lapse of reason in which Nico ate a mix of dog crap and rotting fish. As if only one was not bad enough, he had to combine the two together into a smorgasbord of disgust.

Pink Floyd don’t release a new album. They are devoid of ideas. “New” album release a record company.

Should they really release a new album? Is it necessary? I’m not so sure.

well, it would be so nice….but be realistic, knowing that Rick is gone, Nick can’t play any more the battery and David and Roger feel as if they were the last coke in the desert, I see that is something impossible to make reality.

You’re an idiot, you must be a Beatles fan but Floyd is in a class of their own. Good day

I am very excited about this. All these negative comments are just proof of a lack of appreciation for real music.

This will probably be the unreleased”Big Spliff” material from the Division Bell Sessions. Seeing as Roger was long out of the band by this point, I doubt he will have any involvement. Particularity since he called his former band mates “a pretty fair forgery.”

Wow! I totally pumped for this… NOT!! Most overrated band ever coming out with a “new” album 20 years after their last one means they’re provably out of money… and since Gilmour’s solo stuff is crap, this is his solution. Now all the PF fans will blindly rejoice in total subjectivity to what will be crap… They were overrated 40 years ago and they’re still overrated today!

Why would anyone even spend the time to pen such a ridiculous comment over music they aren’t capable of appreciating? You sir, clearly have such a sad existence and obviously think that your viewpoint is the only one that’s correct.

Jon
July 8, 2014 at 3:28 pm

I am in no way trying to make people believe that they’re not good musicians or that the’re incompetent songwriters or even bad live performers, just like other bands from that era (Beattles, Zeplin, etc.)… I’m saying that their fame was a fluke, yes their music lives on, just like any other great bands/artists, but there’s something unsettling about waiting 20 years to release B-sides… I will always say PF is overrated and unnappealing but I do have the respect to accept other people’s opinion. I’m allowed to state my miscontent or euphoria just like anybody else…

If you keep under medical care, they will help you get your head out of your ass and that will help you hear better. When waters left the band became better.

Anonymous
July 6, 2014 at 12:02 am

Are you crazy. I love both but David Gilmore doesn’t even compare to waters when it comes to writing and designing shows. Roger waters was the one that actually designed the wall tour and the concepts involved. This is why I say that Floyd was better with waters.

sorry dude but i disagree with u , how the hell they are overrated and their music lived 40 years !!!! there is no way u can be overrated and your music live that long and most of the musicians from the 90’s till now PF was one of their biggest influence ….use your brains before you talk

Pink Floyd was one of the most influential and successful progressive rock bands of their time. To say they are
‘overrated’ is absurd.

Jon
