“Weird” Al Yankovic parodies Pharrell’s “Happy” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”

on July 14, 2014, 12:44pm

As two of the biggest “Songs of the Summer” in recent memory, Pharrell’s “Happy” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” have been the source of countless parodies. Some have been entertaining, while others, like the Minecraft-inspired “Get Crafty”, have been downright offensive. Now, a true parody professional emerges, as one “Weird” Al Yankovic takes aims at both smash singles.

With “Tacky”, the “Weird” one spoofs “Happy”, calling out everyone who dares wear plaid with stripes or starts every meal by posting a picture to Instagram. The lyrical content may be less “life is great!” and more “stop being awful people”, but Yankovic offers a joyful video. Joined by Jack Black, Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, and other actors and comedians, Yankovic shimmies and struts his way through the Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. Really digging that sweet airbrushed t-shirt there, Al.

For his take on “Get Lucky”, Yankovic picks up his trusty accordion, ’cause, ya know, polka and parody totally go together like Twinkies and hot dogs. The result isn’t quite as funky and playful as the original, but its rapid-fire barrage of brassy horns, slight banjo, and Big Band harmonies feels suited for an old Looney Tunes short. Seriously, make that video posthaste.

Listen to “Get Lucky” here, and watch “Tacky” below (via Nerdist).

Both tracks appear on Yankovic’s upcoming 14th studio album, Mandatory Fun, due out July 15th via RCA. (“Get Lucky” actually appears as the finale to the medley “NOW That’s What I Call Polka!”.)

I really didn’t like this song before Weird Al remade it. Yikes.

Why do you list every guest in the Tacky video except Kristen Schaal and then say “other actors and comedians”? Just seems odd.

Is that Kristen Schaal in the elevator and who is she

Slightly misleading article on what he parodies. Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” is not a parody on the album but part of his series of wacky polka versions, lyrics are not changed. He has had a polka medley on each album since In 3-d

I LOVE Weird Al. He is a GENIUS!!!!

July 14, 2014 at 3:18 pm

Get Lucky sounds an awful lot like a few other Polka-type spoofs Al’s made. I mean an awful lot. Tacky is excellent though. :]

July 14, 2014 at 2:32 pm

How was the “Get Crafty” spoof “downright offensive? I just watched it. It’s corny, but well done for such an amateur fan project. Offensive?? lol

July 14, 2014 at 5:25 pm

Yes I was wondering as well what the hell might be considered offensive in that Minecraft parody?

July 14, 2014 at 2:14 pm

Videos like ‘Tacky’ are ridiculously hard to film in one shot. I wonder how many takes it took them.

July 15, 2014 at 9:05 am

Very unlikely it was all in one shot. For example in the transition between Kristen Schaal (woman in elevator) and Jack Black, they pass the wall, and two shots could have been bonded there quite easily.

July 17, 2014 at 10:00 pm

Weird Al said it was, indeed, one shot: “While it looks like there MIGHT have been an edit somewhere, I absolutely guarantee you, that was all done in ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT. That was a bit of a challenge for me, because I start the video on a 5th floor fire escape, and I reappear on street level wearing completely different clothes. That means – for EVERY TAKE – as soon as the camera was off me I had to run down 5 flights of stairs WHILE CHANGING MY CLOTHES so I could be on camera again at the end. Definitely got my workout THAT day!”

How is “Happy” a song of the summer?? It was released in NOVEMBER.

July 14, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Technically it was in “Despicable Me 2″ so it is a summer song… LAST summer.

July 14, 2014 at 3:19 pm

It’s probably summer in November somewhere on Earth. :P

The “Get Lucky” parody is probably on Al’s polka track he does on most if not all is albums.

Warning: the Get Lucky link plays the song at a ridiculously loud volume and there’s no way to turn it down.
