Billy Corgan performs 31-song, three-hour retrospective concert in Chicago

on August 31, 2014, 12:23pm

On Saturday night, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan waxed three hours worth of nostalgia with a career-spanning acoustic set at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival.

The 31-song setlist mixed greatest hits (“Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, “Tonight, Tonight”, and “1979”) with lesser known rarities (“The Rose March”, “Lonely Is the Name”), new songs (“Burnt Orange Black”), and live debuts (“Methusela”).

The encore proved especially bizarre: Corgan performed an ambient rendition of “The World’s Fair” from his unissued “ChicagoSongs/ChicagoKid” project. Then, he closed the set by inviting members of his pro-wrestling league to accompany him for Zwan’s “Of a Broken Heart”.

For the concert, Corgan was accompanied by guitarist Jeff Schroeder, the only other current member of Smashing Pumpkins. Rounding out the lineup were two members of NYC rock band Ex Cops.
