Listen: Diarrhea Planet’s new song “Spooners”

on August 01, 2014, 12:00pm

For his entry in the 2014 installment of Adult Swim’s Singles Program, Auto-Tune impressario Future upped the anty by pairing the silky “Coupe” with a cartoon video ripped from Adult Swim’s own nightly programming block. So, just how could any other band/artist hope to match trap music, sweet luxury cars, and Ultraman cameos? How about with four blistering guitars.

That’s right, this week’s Singles release features the stylings of Nashville’s own Diarrhea Planet, who unveil a brand new song entitled “Spooners”. Here, the six-piece shift slightly away from the quirky pop punk sheen of last year’s I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams. Instead, the focus becomes about generating an even more physically-jarring wall of noise, which they accomplish with four-to-the-floor riffs, anthemic vocals that leave them practically hoarse, and heaps of feedback. It’s sort of like running head-long into a mosh pit, if the other attendees were all NFL linebackers.

In addition to Future and Diarrhea Planet, the 2014 Singles Program has already featured Giorgio Moroder, Speedy Ortiz, Machindrum, and Sleep, who offered up their first new track in 20 years.

The Singles Program will continue each Monday for the next seven weeks and features new music from Run The Jewels, Mastodon, Deafheaven, Captain Murphy, and more. Consult the full schedule below.

Four-on-the-floor (not “four-to-the-floor,” as it’s written) is an expression describing a beat in which the kick drum strikes on every quarter note. Not sure how exactly it could be applied to “riffs” (presumably guitar riffs).

Incredible. Can’t wait to hear them play this Thursday in SF.
