Primus recruits Tool’s Danny Carey to drum for upcoming tour

on August 14, 2014, 1:00pm

When Primus hit the road next month, they’ll be without drummer Tim Alexander, who is currently recovering from open-heart surgery. Fortunately, they’ve found themselves a worthy replacement in Tool’s Danny Carey.

According to Rolling Stone, Carey will sit behind the kit for a handful of the band’s shows in September, including their appearances at Riot Fest Chicago and Denver (win tickets here).

Primus’ always colorful frontman, Les Claypool, said in a statement to Rolling Stone: “The mighty Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander is a polyrhythmic Viking of extreme and unique talent so the one person that we thought could step into his shoes and do it justice is the one and only Mr. Danny Carey. Whereas Herb is the stocky, Easter Island-faced, boulder of a drumming human, at nearer to seven feet, Danny Carey is the mighty redwood tree of percussion; towering over his kit like a golden-haired noble spruce.”

“I can’t wait to see that menacing grin of Danny’s shine out as we pound our way through ‘Here Come the Bastards’ and ‘Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers.’ He’s a dear old friend and we are extremely excited to have him aboard, and I would wager we are equally if not more intrigued than most by what kind of sounds are going to come out of the three of us once we actually get in a room together and do more than just consume fancy booze.”

In addition to Alexander’s work in Primus, he’s drummed for both of Maynard James Keenan’s Tool side projects, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle, which explains how he and Carey have crossed paths.

Alexander is expected to rejoin the band when they embark on their Primus and the Chocolate Factory tour in October. See the band’s full tour schedule below.

DC & Claypool also “crossed paths” whilst hanging out/jamming with Copeland and Peart. I’m not so sure APC nor Pucifer have anything to do with it at all.

Super excited but really, when will Primus come back to Australia? I don;t mind who is thrashing the skins, I just want my dose of goodness in a live venue!

Both Carey and Claypool also performed as 2/3 of a power-trio on Adrian Belew’s Side One album in 2005~
