The John Dwyer-fronted garage rock outfit Coachwhips will reissue their sophomore album, Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine, on August 19th via Castle Face Records. In anticipation, it’s streaming in full below.
Before Thee Oh Sees were considered more than just a minor side project, Dwyer was developing his trademark raucous sound with the Coachwhips. The band was short lived, lasting for a few vibrant years and a handful of LPs before disbanding in 2005. Last year, though, Dwyer opted to reissue the band’s first record, Hands On The Controls, through his own Castle Face Records. The buzz from the reissue was enough to temporarily reunite the outfit for blistering performances at March’s South By Southwest.
Now Dwyer is back at it once again, working to restore the original recordings and help them to find a new audience. According to a press release, “The tracks have been re-tweaked to taste (a pinch of capsicum) and what a picture emerges – the scuzz and squall cracking ever so slightly and revealing a coffee-can full of earworms underneath.” Our first listen came a few months back with the “retouched” title track.
This record is garage rock at its most raw and minimalist. Chunky guitar chords chime in sporadically over crashing drums while Dwyer’s distorted vocals rage emphatically over top. The lo-fi sounds not only add to the griminess, but also serve as a bit of a prequel for what we’d eventually hear in Dwyer’s later work.
