Massive Attack emerged yesterday with new music delivered via an interactive app called Fantom. The app takes data from the user’s environment (camera images, movement, time of day, and even heartbeat) to remix four new tracks. As the band teased via Instagram, it appears fans will soon be able to hear the original masters of the songs on a physical release.
Band member Robert Del Naja, aka 3D, posted an image that looks to be the back of a vinyl sleeve for an EP entitled Ritual Spirit. (Note the fine-print credits and the light glare.) The tracklist features all four tracks featured on Fantom, also confirming the collaborators involved in each. Azekel guests on the title track, “Voodoo In My Blood” features Mercury Prize-winning hip-hop group Young Fathers, “Take It There” features Tricky, and “Dead Editors” has vocals from Roots Manuva.
See for yourself:
There’s no caption accompanying the post, so it’s not clear how or when this release will become available. Reached for contact, the band’s press representative confirmed that it would not be out today, but offered no comment beyond that. What does seem to be clear, however, is that Massive Attack is gearing up for their first release since 2010’s Heligoland.
