Alternate version of Nirvana’s “Marigold” surfaces — listen

on February 29, 2016, 9:35am

The Nirvana vault has been mostly pilfered, but every once and a while an unheard gem surfaces. Case in point: this alternate version of “Marigold” featuring the addition of cello played by Kera Schaley.

“Marigold” was penned by Dave Grohl, originally for his 1992 solo project Pocketwatch, and later re-recorded in the sessions for In Utero. Grohl sings lead on the track in addition to playing guitar and bass. Krist Novoselic is on bass. According to Grohl, although discernible, Kurt Cobain sings the low harmony.

“Marigold” was released as the b-side to “Heart-Shaped Box”, and later appeared in the posthumous box set With the Lights Out in 2004.
