Sad13’s Sadie Dupuis gets blood facials with Shamir in video for “<2" — watch

on September 22, 2016, 3:28pm

Sad13 — the pop-leaning solo project of Speedy Ortiz frontwoman and shred comptroller Sadie Dupuis — continues to be absolutely excellent. She’s already previewed the feminist lean of her debut album Slugger with the consent-pop track “Get A YesNow, she’s delivered “<2”, a track that makes the point that women can be smart even if they like to look fabulous.

“‘<2’ is about choosing to be glossy and caustic,” Dupuis said. “It’s about knowing you’re smart, knowing you’re doused in glitter, and refusing to see these two bits of self-knowledge as conflicting. I still come up against ignoramuses who conflate feminized personal style with anti-intellectualism.”

As for the video itself, it’s one long, loving tribute to YouTube makeup tutorials. Though the procedures get goofier and wilder as the video goes on — including a play on the bagel head craze and a “blood facial” with Shamir, All Dogs’ Amanda Bailey, Field Mouse’s Rachel Browne and Empath’s Emily Shanahan — it clearly comes from a place of love and playfulness. “Undergoing several dissimilar cosmetic transformations fit with the song’s theme of self-determinism, while also celebrating aesthetic mutability. Plus, we wanted to make me look like a reptilian and glue a bagel to my head,” Dupuis explained.

Watch the clip above. In addition to sharing the new video, Sad13 also announced her first-ever solo tour. Check out the dates for that below. Slugger is out November 11th on Carpark Records.
