Azealia Banks and Russell Crowe allegedly got into an altercation during a private party in Beverly Hills over the weekend. TMZ initially reported that the confrontation occurred after Banks laughed and made some comments about the music playlist of Crowe, who was hosting the event. Crowe’s guests came to his defense, leading Banks, who multiple witnesses say was acting “erratic”, to allegedly lash out and make both verbal and physical threats.
In a since-deleted Facebook post, Banks said it was Crowe that incited the incident and claimed “he called me a “n****r, choked me, threw me out and spat at me,” adding, “Last night was one of the hardest nights of sleep I’ve had in a long time. The men in the room allowed it to happen.”
Now, in a new interview with TMZ, Banks has given her side of the story as well as announced that she’ll be cutting all ties with RZA, with whom she came to the party as a plus-one, because he’d sided with Crowe during the altercation.
According to Banks, tensions became heated because when “men are making jokes, you [a woman] can’t try to be funny.” There was some “bruising of male egos” and “a lot of trying to put me in my place,” she said, “which kind of backfired ’cause I’m just as quick and witty.” She maintained that everything in her Facebook post was true and didn’t seem slightly surprised that Crowe’s guests would turn on her. “If I did something fucked up at my party, of course they’re gonna side with me.”
As for the Wu-Tang Clan rapper, Banks also wasn’t shocked by his actions at the party — or lack thereof “because RZA doesn’t have much clout in a room full of real, high-powered Hollywood white men… he just stood there like a chump.” Banks was planning on signing a record deal with RZA, but she says that’s a thing of the past now and there’s “no chance for reconciliation.” “If these guys can chump you out like that, that’s not somebody I need to attach myself to… I can’t be represented by some chump.”
TMZ reported that Banks had filed a police report following the altercation; she has not said whether she will follow through with it.
