Work on Jim James’ forthcoming solo album, Eternally Even, was triggered last year when he accidentally rediscovered unused material on his iPod. Although the inception may have been old ideas, the songs that make up the Regions of Light and Sound of God follow-up speak very directly to today. That’s the case with lead single/anti-Trump track “Same Old Lie”, and it continues to hold with the latest album sample, “Here in Spirit”.
According to a press release, the My Morning Jacket frontman wrote “Here in Spirit” after taking part in a Los Angeles rally following the Pulse nightclub shootings in Orlando. “I was feeling so utterly gutted that things like this keep happening,” James said. “It’s a song about speaking out and trying to be there for people in spirit even if you can’t be at every rally and battle. We have such a duty to speak out for equality and for each other.”
The track may be a rallying cry, but it’s a soft one. Tick-tack drumming and lightly dripping piano notes remain steady underneath the electronic rhythms and swirls James tends to use on his solo material. It all comes together as a sturdy R&B-tinged tune that builds towards a chorus of, “If you don’t speak out/ We can’t hear it/ All of those always here/ Here in spirit.”
