Back in January, we rightfully faulted Grammy-winning pop star Sam Smith for being unfamiliar with Radiohead. Unfortunately, we’ve found a more egregious crime against music this week: NBA all-star and recent Olympic gold medalist DeMarcus Cousins apparently has never heard of Paul McCartney.

The Sacramento Kings center was asked yesterday whether he attended Macca’s concert at the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento last week. According to ESPN’s Arash Markazi, his answer was simply, “I don’t even know who that is.”

It’s incredibly hard to believe that a 26-year-old American — he was born in Alabama and attended the University of Kentucky — could have missed out on McCartney, or a little known British band called The Beatles. At the very least, Cousins, himself an R&B musician, should be hipped to the hit single “FourFiveSeconds” from Kanye West, Rihanna, and McCartney. Consider this a botched open layup.
