Pussy Riot return with a bloody bathtub full of anger in “Organs” video — watch

on October 26, 2016, 1:30pm

While they may have disappeared from the public eye once the fascination around them died down, Russia’s feminist punk collective Pussy Riot never really went away. It turns out they were just working on entering their deconstructed trip-hop phase.

Or at least that’s what their new video “Organs” would have you believe. Their second new song in as many days, its booming, stuttering percussion and cold vocal delivery is a far cry from the lo-fi shouted punk slogans that they made their name on. The headier, disjointed sound is no coincidence; track was produced by TV on The Radio’s David Andrew Sitek, whose band long ago mastered the sound of the world falling down around them.

And the video for “Organs” is just as much of a departure. Past Pussy Riot clips were shots of the collective getting in trouble and stirring up shit in their native Russia, but “Organs” is a slick and spooky clip of Nadya Tolokonnikova in a blood-filled bathtub (just in time for Halloween). Watch it above.

The song’s themes of female oppression are all the more profound in the context of today’s political environment.  In the video’s description, the band asks whether or not Americans want to live under a President Trump. “Do you really want to live in according to tradition? Do you want to make America or Russia great again? You don’t want to end unwilling pregnancies with an abortion, like Trump?” the band writes. “Then cut your balls, motherfucker, and there will be no need for abortions. But leave my pussy alone and don’t touch me with your dirty tradition.”
