Pussy Riot share video for new feminist anthem “Straight Outta Vagina” — watch

on October 25, 2016, 1:23pm

Punk protestors Pussy Riot have written political songs about everything from the Syrian refugee crisis to the Black Lives Matter movement to the corruption of the Russian government. But with a name like Pussy Riot, it’s clear the group has strongly held feminist ideologies, too. Now, they’re putting the power of the Pussy on full display with their new track “Straight Outta Vagina”.

Produced by frequent collaborator Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, “Straight Outta Vagina” is more dance-punk than the sloppy punk the group were performing back when they first broke onto the international scene. Bolstered by appearances from rappers Desi Mo and Leikeli47, the song expresses the strength and value of the modern woman with lines like, “My vagina is tough and dangerous/ Shakin’ off the major labels/ Vagina gonna take the stage/ ‘Cause vagina got a lot to say.” In the chorus, figurehead Nadya Tolokonnikova reminds us all, “Don’t play stupid, don’t play dumb/ Vagina’s where you’re really from.”

Check out the video above, and read Pussy Riot’s message about the song below.

“Female power and female sexuality are yet need to be discovered. Discussed. Performed. Lived up.

Women were slaves of the world for centuries. Women’s got their right to vote less than 100 years ago. Russia (1917), US (1919), Switzerland (1971). We’re still just about to build another roles, norms, ethics for vaginas owners.

And the owner of vaginas is not some narcissistic stupid orange ape who’d claim that he could easily grab women by their pussies. The owner of vagina is a woman. Who wears her vag as a badge of honour.

Pussy is a new dick, ladies.
Oh bondage, up yours.”
