Report: New Gorillaz album will be finished in “two weeks”

on October 07, 2016, 10:45am

This week seemingly kicked off Gorillaz’s fourth phase with the unveiling of a new multimedia story centered around Noodle. However, it appears we’re still a little ways off from hearing the band’s new studio album.

According to a reddit user who caught up with Damon Albarn yesterday, the album is not yet finished … but it’s close. Albarn reportedly said he had “two weeks left of recording and the album’s finished.”

Earlier this week, Albarn was spotted in the studio with English producer Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Jessie Ware).

Back in June, Gorillaz co-founder and artist Jamie Hewlett told fans that the album would surface next year. Provided that the band opts for a traditional rollout, it would appear a 2017 release is still the plan, though Gorillaz did drop their last album — The Fall — on Christmas Day in 2010.

Speaking of a traditional album rollout, Gorillaz star in a new marketing campaign for luxury car company Jaguar. Today, Noodle was named the new “global ambassador” of Jaguar Racing and she’ll serve as a “flag-bearer for Jaguar’s newly launched Formula E [electric car racing] team.” The impetus for the partnership is “to develop the next generation of electric powered road cars and, with the help of Noodle, to inspire the next generation of young engineers – male and female.”

Below, watch a new short film directed by Hewlett and featuring Noodle driving the Formula E race car. At the very least, it gives some insight into the art direction for phase four.
