on November 11, 2016, 9:33am

As news of Leonard Cohen’s death spread, many fans gathered outside his Montreal home for an impromptu vigil. According to reports on the ground, the mourners sang Cohen’s songs and read poetry out loud. Some also laid flowers and lit candles on his doorstop. Others poured a glass of wine and lit up a cigarette in his honor. You can see images from the vigil below, and watch a new report from CTV News Montreal here.

In New York City, the Chelsea Hotel has also been turned into a makeshift memorial. The hotel not only served as Cohen’s home for several years of his life, but it was also immortalized in his classic song “Chelsea Hotel No. 2”.
