In the years since its release in February of 1998, Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has become one of indie rock’s touchstone albums. Its legacy and legend are so massive that it can be hard to locate the band — the actual people — at the center of it all, but a newly unearthed video may help with that.

As Stereogum points out, the YouTube channel “Neutral Milk Hotel Archive” recently uploaded a video of the band playing a house show in Athens on Halloween in 1997. The show is significant not only because it shows the endearingly human side of Jeff Mangum and co., but because it contains some of the first full-band performances of songs that would later appear on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Mangum kicks the show off with the debut of the just-completed “Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2”, then proceeds to run through full-band renditions of “The King of Carrot FLowers Pt. 1” and “Holland, 1945”.

Check out the full video above. While several clips from the show have been floating around YouTube since 2009, this video marks the first time they’ve all been collected in a complete set.
