Scott “Wino” Weinrich has reunited The Obsessed a handful of times since disbanding in 1986. 2012 was the last time the stoner metal outfit was reactivated, but that was just for a few live gigs. This time, however, Weinrich and his band are back ready to rock with new music and a new album.
Today, they’ve shared their first new material in two decades via the Adult Swim Singles Program. It’s actually a reworking of their 1983 single “Sodden Jackal”, here renamed “Sodden Jackyl”. This new version is much heavier on the doom side of things, the whole thing doubling down on crushing riffs and pummeling low-end. Take a listen to the madness below.
“Sodden Jackyl” is just the first taste of new material coming soon from The Obsessed. Weinrich teamed with Planet Caravan’s Brian Constantino and Dave Sherman to record a new album, Sacred, which will be out from Relapse Records this spring. Sherman has since left the project, with Bruce Falkinburg and Sara Seraphim stepping in to create the first four-person The Obsessed line-up ever. They’ll likely tour behind Sacred next year.
