The xx have been in and out of the studio working on a new album for nearly a year now, according to pictures across their social media channels. While piecing together the much-anticipated follow-up to 2012’s Coexist, the three Brits have been bumping a Spotify playlist of songs which they shared with fans last month.
Today, a mysterious new track has been added to that playlist, as Indiespot points out. The 55-second offering is uncredited, untitled, and accompanied by nothing but a white space for artwork, but even a cursory listen highly suggests it’s something from Jamie xx, Romy Madley-Croft, and Oliver Sim. There’s ambient wash, the hum of reverb, and brief female vocals that could be those of Madley-Croft. The song is also tagged with Young Turks, the band’s longtime label.
We’ve reached out to Young Turks for comment, but have yet to hear back. In the meantime, check out the track for yourself below.
Update – November 6th: The xx have shared a second untitled clip of music.
Update – November 7th: The UK outfit has added a third piece of untitled music.
Songs from Radiohead, Cat Power, Frank Ocean, Rihanna, The Velvet Underground, Queens of the Stone Age, and Kaytranada are also included on the playlist, which can be heard in full here. The cryptic cut comes on the heels of The xx’s first tour dates in three years.
