Laura Marling chases down a “Wild Fire” on new song — listen

on January 11, 2017, 10:05am

This March, Laura Marling returns with a new album called Semper Femina. Her sixth to date in just a little over nine years, it was penned during a particularly “masculine time in her life” and examines society’s perception of sexuality and gender.

“I started out writing Semper Femina as if a man was writing about a woman, and then I thought; ‘it’s not a man, it’s me,'” the English singer-songwriter said in a statement. “I don’t need to pretend it’s a man to justify the intimacy, or the way I’m looking and feeling about women. It’s me looking specifically at women and feeling great empathy towards them, and by proxy, towards myself.”

Marling previously shared “Soothing”, the LP’s lead single and one of the best song we heard in November. She’s now let loose “Wild Fire”, a gentle but rich folk number in which Marling advises a loved one on how to shape up and to be a better partner. “Chasing down a wild fire/ Are you trying to make a cold liar out of me? / You want to get high? You overcome those desires before you come to me.”

Semper Femina, the follow-up to 2015’s Short Movie, arrives on March 10th. It was recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by Marling and Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes, Jim James).
