Rose Martelli - News Writer

Rose’s proudest moment of musical fandom remains her first one: At the age of 10, she demanded a ride to the mall from her Dad, walked into Alwilk Records & Tapes, plunked down a fiver, and walked out with Born in the U.S.A. on cassette… which she then played ad nauseum on a Radio Shack tape recorder until she had every last “all right” and “uh oh” from the end of “Glory Days” memorized. She can still sing it by rote.

All these years later, the girl’s left Jersey, but the Jersey hasn’t left the girl. She dishes her opinions to anyone stupid enough to read them via Time Out New York, Entertainment Weekly, Salon and other publications that have no idea why they let her in the door in the first place.

Most of her favorite singers she refers to on a first-name basis. In addition to Bruce, there’s Otis, Johnny, Jenny, Billie, Ella, Nina, Mick, Rufus, Thao and John/Paul. Newer faves include The Blow, One for the Team, Fuck Buttons, Stars, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Mattison. There will probably be a new-new fave by the time you are done reading this.
