Lollapalooza 2012

Aug 03 - Aug 05 2012

Chicago, Illinois (Grant Park)

$95 (1-Day); SOLD OUT (3-Day)

Conceived and created in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band, Lollapalooza ran annually until 1997, and was revived in 2003. From its inception through 1997, and its revival in 2003, the festival toured North America. In 2004, the festival organizers decided to expand the dates to two days per city, however poor ticket sales forced the 2004 tour to be cancelled. In 2005, Farrell and the William Morris Agency partnered up with Austin, Texas-based company Capital Sports Entertainment (now C3 Presents) and retooled it into its current format as a weekend destination festival.

I guess there are 9 headliners now given how big Perry’s stage is. There’s a pattern of making a band a headliner that normally might not have been one (K.O.L. and Phoenix in years past) and I’m speculating who that might be.  Wonder if Chem. Bros. or Bassnectar headline Perry’s this year too… (I’m admittedly not as up on who’s set to tour at any given time in the DJ world.)

RHCP seems like a safe bet.  Wondering if No Doubt will get an album and tour out in time to play Lolla.  I’d bet The Shins play Lolla too.  My question is who’ll get that 6th headlining slot: Shins, Florence, M83, Justice?

This must be your first year following Lollapalooza lineup speculation.

Many Lollapalooza artists in the past have played that NYC Soundstage show that M83 is playing this year. If anything that show makes him/them more likely for Lollapalooza.

I dont entirely disagree…m83 is more likely for pitchfork, BUT Lolla is aug 3-5th.  so whichever day they/he plays, there will be more than one day to get to nyc for the show on the 8th.

@5b1867e4b4218f5bce8d81022776e7b3:disqus , I’m with you on that. I’d say P4k is most likely for M83 given all the coverage they’ve received from them. My guess is they get the slot Cut Copy had last year.

Leaving Chicago open doesn’t mean a damn thing for Pitchfork-approved bands.  Florence or M83 could play either fest.  M83 could do North Coast too.

Radiohead… ::YAWN:: way overrated. About as fun to listen to as Yanni.

Sleigh Bells open for Red Hot Chili Peppers for their tour but then they aren’t opening for them during their Chicago date. I think at the very least it makes them suspicious.

They just changed their “Chicago” date to Rosemont, IL maybe trying not to break the exclusivity clause in their Lollapalooza contract

Radiohead = most overrated band of this generation.

you= guy making the most stupid comment of this generation :) Radiohead are the BEST band at providing sophisticated alt rock, changing their style with each album and consistently putting out good music. People unable to properly realize their greatness or RESPECT them as a band, are people unworthy of the musical wealth theyve provided. Now please get the fuck out of our sight, “Quizzle”, you esoteric named fuck.

How does that schedule makei t logical that M83 are going to be at Lolla?  If you are going to say that makes them a logical participant, aren’t RHCP “logical” as well?  Same goes with Jane’s Addiction.  If you are going to use the questionable logic of released tour dates, then you need to do it across the board for all likely artists.

Uh, remember that TVOTR were slated to play shows in Chicago last May before they played Pitchfork, so it may be entirely possible that they are there too.

red hot chili peppers recent rescheduled tour dates gives them a gap that perfectly fits lollapalooza, Radiohead is open in august, justice is open in august just sayin

What about a Kanye & Jay-Z headlining show and a DJ set from Kanye at Perry’s?

there is no way in hell that last years perry’s lineup will be topped in 2012. just saying. but it would be nice to see justice, chemical brothers, black keys, slightly stoopid, daft punk, kanyee, beck, the smiths….but eh no way in telling

ghaf
March 12, 2012 at 1:28 pm

It could easily be topped. The world of EDM moves fast and theres plenty of artists who have gotten huge since last august that would kill it at Perrys. I expect Avicii and Knife Party to be there to name a few.

December 5, 2011 at 3:38 pm

It’s December, so we have no way of knowing this lineup. It’s still fun to guess though.

That being said: Black Keys as a subheadliner. Justice at Perry’s. Radiohead on the main stage.

JJ
December 1, 2011 at 7:52 pm

A little earlier than last year but here you guys go…

Black Keys
Mars Volta

That is all I have for now.

As far as headliners go, considering its success last year, Lollapalooza is should be sticking to a formula that goes something like this: Rap or pop act, Electronic act, Two big name rock band, A rock band that appeals to the “indie” demographic, and a legacy act from the 90’s or late 80’s.
My best guess for next year would have to be
Some combination of Jay Z and Kanye West for the rap spot
Justice would have made sense as the electronic spot had their second album made more of an impact. But who knows? Lolla’s headliner choices often surprise me.
Two ‘Big Name” rock acts- Too early to tell at this point. Wilco is a logical guess, as are many of the other names presented below
“Indie” demographic: Definitely the Black Keys. if the Black Keys do not headline lollapalooza, I will be shocked.
Legacy: Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Just a guess..
Jay-Z & Kanye West -Queen- Bjork
Janes Addiction- Justice- Mumford and Sons

Headliners: Pixes, Shins, Kooks, Raconteurs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Death Cab

My dream lineup for next year’s Lolla would be RHCP, Blink 182, RATM, Everclear, Volbeat, Pixies, Jay-Z, Dropkick Murphy’s, and more……….

Chili Peppers makes perfect sense, tourng in the fall, new album, headlined before. Radiohead also may tour next year so that’s a possibility. I wonder if there will be a dance headliner pretty much every year now? I’m gonna bet on Wilco headlining again, maybe against a dance act.

I learned after this year, it doesn’t matter how excited you are for the lineup, if you go with good friends, you are going to have an amazing time.   I had the best experience this year and was less than thrilled with the lineup.   I discovered new bands that I now love, and have a weekend full of unforgettable memories.
