With the first major festival of the season under our belts, let’s look ahead to what lies ahead in our futures. Many lineup announcements have been flying in from both sides of the Atlantic, with Reading and Leeds, Northside Festival, Summer Camp, Sweetlife, and Heavy T.O.

Camp Bisco joins the ranks of festivals celebrating big anniversaries this year, with their 10th edition attracting big names, while the Hangout Festival continues to add A-list acts to its bill beneath the Mason-Dixon Line. The pleasant surprises didn’t end there, The Gathering of the Vibes managed to draw a diverse offering including Elvis Costello and Jane’s Addiction to its jam-based lineup.

NEWS:

– A dance act will headline this year’s Lollapalooza, according to founder Perry Farrell.

– Brooklyn’s Northside Festival landed Beirut and Sharon Van Etten as headliners for its 2011 edition. Other confirmed acts include Allo Darlin’, Deer Tick, and Twin Sister, with over 200 names still to be announced. This year will also feature a DIY film competition for shorts and features, and another CoS showcase! Early bird tickets are now available for $60 via the festival’s website.

– The initial lineup of the Gathering of the Vibes festival includes Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Jane’s Addiction, moe., Furthur, John Butler Trio, and Dark Star Orchestra. Passes are available at the festival website. Another installment of acts is expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

– Joining Def Leppard, Rob Zombie, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and others at England’s Download Festival will be glam-rockers The Darkness. The band announced it is reuniting to play their first show in five years. The festival is set to take place in Leicestershire, England, runs June 10-12. Three-day passes are now available via seetickets.com.

– The Hangout Music Festival’s organizers somehow found a way to make an already jam-packed lineup even better. The Avett Brothers, STS9, Mofro, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Brandi Carlile are among the Gulf Shores, AL-based festival’s latest additions. Head over to the festival’s website to snatch a three-day pass for $174 while you still can.

– Camp Bisco announced the initial lineup for its decennial; Cut Copy, Wiz Khalifa, Disco Biscuits, Bassnectar, and Pretty Lights are among the 100+ performers making an appearance at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY this summer. Although more acts are expected in the following weeks, early bird tickets are available now for $140 here.

– The Reading and Leeds lineup announcement assured an appropriate end to the summer festival circuit. Muse, The Strokes, Jane’s Addiction, The National, and My Chemical Romance will play alongside an impressive undercard that includes Interpol, The Kills, Odd Future, The Offspring, Deftones, The Streets, Two Door Cinema Club. Tickets for bothReading and Leeds are on sale now for £192.50 via seetickets.com.

– 311′s Pow Wow Festival is scheduled to hit Florida’s festival hotspot Live Oak (already home to Bear Creek and Wanee) this August 4th-6th. Although other lineup details are forthcoming, 311 will be playing four sets including Transistor in its entirety. The festival will coincide with a nationwide tour the band will be making with Sublime with Rome. A fan pre-sale begins today, and Pow Wow passes can be obtained at SeatGeek.com.

This past weekend, iconic post-rock Canadians Godspeed You! Black Emperor played three sets, their first in over a decade, at ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas in Minehead, England. But luckily for us the middle-of-the-pack festivals continue to pull their weight and buoy the news, and while some fests make the morning papers due to their tremendous success, others are in the headlines because they bit off a little more than they could chew.

News

– The easiest festival to attend in the history of attending festivals (aka Outside Lands) brought a hodgepodge of artists and sounds to the Bay Area.

– Between the date changes, mediocre lineup, and admission policy switches, you sorta had to see this coming: festival organizers announced Toronto’s Imagine Concert would be postponed until next year.

– The L.A. rave scene finally hosted a fest that went off without a hitch at this year’s HARD Summer Festival.

– Despite an already killer lineup, the folks behind the inaugural edition of Moogfest decided to further outdo themselves by adding Devo and Disco Biscuits to the lineup.

– Festival organizers announced the official lineup for this year’s Farm Aid. The star-studded list includes Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Kenny Chesney, Jeff Tweedy, and many more.

– CoS is giving away three pairs of passes to this year’s Scion Garage Fest. Shoot us an email, and you’ll have a chance to see The Oblivians, The Gories, The Ravonettes, and many others in Lawrence, Kansas.

– [Insert fun pun here]. The 2010 edition of Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest features everyone from Devo, MGMT, and The Hold Steady to “Weird” Al Yankovic, Mastodon, and Bad Religion.

– Between spaced out set times and scheduling conflicts, prepare to do a fair share of walking at this year’s Outside Lands.

– Organizers of Toronto’s Imagine Concert announced the event will be free of charge for those who donate 2 non-perishable food items.  The fest’s initial lineup was also released.

– The inaugural City Arts Festival plans to bring the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Big Boi, She & Him, and Gogol Bordello to downtown Seattle in late October.

– Matt Wallin took in a healthy dose of classic rock and newer acts at  HullabaLOU Music Festival .

– Engaged metalheads rejoice! Ozzfest is now offering a wedding package complete with backstage tours, custom t-shirts, and a ceremony presided by ordained minister MC Big Dave.

Last weekend’s Pitchfork Music Festival was my first fest of the summer, and although I had some pretty high expectations, Pitchfork met every one of them. While standing at Girls’ set under the blazing hot sun, a cool breeze began to pick up right at the pinnacle of “Hellhole Ratrace” and reminded me that festivals are truly my favorite place to be. Between the dozens of fantastic acts, stand after stand of delicious food, and the good ol’ outdoors, no place /event on earth can compete with a good music festival. In order to keep you all up-to-date in the world of music festivals, we’ve gathered the latest news — like interviews, recaps, and lineup additions — for our resurrected Festivals in Brief feature. If you haven’t already, get out to a festival this summer. They’re real, and they’re spectacular.

Black Emperor promised it would play nine “American towns” as well a handful of British and European shows, in addition to curating and performing at ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas 2010. Today, the Canadian post-rock outfit lived up to one part of this promise, unveiling plans for a four date UK tour to follow the aforementioned Nightmare Before Xmas festival.

The dates, which mark the band’s first headlining performances in a decade, will take place between December 7th and 13th and include stops in Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, and London. Tickets are now available via seetickets.com. Support for the shows has not yet been announced.

As for those nine American towns? No dates have been unveiled yet, but the Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s booker, The Windish Agency, has previously listed the band’s availability as January 2011. So you might want to keep that month clear.

Black Emperor to end its seven year hiatus and return to curate this year’s edition of ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas. (Well, there goes that debate.)

Set to take place from December 3-5 at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, England, the three-day festival will be part one of a two weekend celebration capping of ATP’s 10th anniversary. December 10-12 will see the Belle and Sebastian-curated Bowlie Weekender 2.

In addition to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, which will perform on all three nights!, the weekend bill also features Bardo Pond, The Ex, Deerhoof, Tim Hecker, Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), and Scout Niblett. In all, some 40 bands will perform, with additional acts set to be unveiled in the weeks ahead.

Tickets, priced at £165.00 (for room only) and £175.00 (for self catering), will go on sale starting Friday, April 9th via atpfestival.com.

However, if you cannot make it to London, don’t fret. In a posting on its website, Godspeed You! Black Emperor notes that it will also play nine “American towns,” as well a handful of British and European shows. We’ll let you know when those are announced. Confused? To put it in layman’s terms, the Lancashire based punk outfit has reunited after almost 20 years to perform at the upcoming ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. The Membranes are the newest act confirmed for the festival, which is scheduled to take place between December 4th and 6th in Minehead, England. Also featured are Ariel Pink, Josh Pearson, Sonic Youth, De la soul, E.P.M.D., Sun Ra Arkestra, and The Horrors among others.

Unfortunately, tickets are already sold out so, all this news will really do for you is make you extremely jealous. Ready … set … go!

So far, Sonic Youth, De La Soul, EPMD, Sun Ra Arkestra, and The Horrors are currently set to join the legendary rockers for this year’s festivies, scheduled for December 4-6, 2009 at the Butlins Holiday Resort in Minehead, England.
