Paste Magazine and myself seem to be agreeing on quite a few things these days. We both believe that Juno was the best film of 2007. We both are paying tribute to the legend that is Joe Strummer. And now, we both seem to think that The National’s Boxer was the best album of 2007. It’s not that I’m a huge fanatic of Paste. In fact, I only recently subscribed to it because of the whole $1 subscription gimmick. But it’s hard to disagree with them over their choice. The National, who easily can be considered one of the most talented bands currently out there, made an album that is simply extraordinary. There’s really no other way to put it.

Ironically, The National are the exact type of band I talked about who have tremendously influenced by Springsteen. In fact, Paste deemed them the blue collar version of the E Street Band . The similarities are staggering. The five-piece former Cincinnati, now Brooklyn natives play the same type of emotional charged songs backed with the vivid, real world lyrics sung by the equally passionate Matt Berninger. The songs are often more like imagery-laced stories that depict everything from the superficial, egotistic nature that plagues America in “Fake Empire” to the struggles of alcoholism in “Green Gloves”. But what makes them truly special is Berninger’s unique heartfelt, baritone voice singing the words like poetry over the complex sound of the band. Everything seems torn and conflicted.

Boxer lacks the musical fury of 2005′s Alligator. Sure, the intensity present on “Mr. November” can be found on this album, but it occurs in a different manner. The more soft and controlled sound of Boxer allows the true passion and the resulting internal conflict of Beringer to be fully appreciated. He is a poet taking each word, each rhythm in stride, deciphering it’s true meaning along the way. The musicality of the album complement each of Beringer’s lyrical journeys perfectly. The soft piano accompaniment helps establish the sorrowing state of corporate success in “Racing Like a Pro,” while the orchestra like sound of “Start a War,” help create the image of the passionate yet fragile state of relationships. The album is brilliant in every aspect. And to think, these guys went mostly unnoticed until 2005. They are one of the true representations of the potential brilliance of music.

Since the conception of this blog, I’ve sure done my share of postings on Bruce Springsteen. It’s not just because I grew up in a household where his discography was constantly blasted into my ears. Nor was it because that even after 30+ years, he is still on the top of his game. The thing I find most fascinating in regards to Springsteen is that it’s almost as if he is the father figure for many of today’s best musicians. Just off the top of my head, from Oberst to Adams, The National to The Hold Steady, I can name at least a hundred musicians who have clearly been influenced by The Boss. These are the same people that compose today’s indie and alternative music world, and who we blog about everyday. Yet without the influence of Springsteen, the sounds and lyrical styles of these great artists may never have come about.

Remarkably, Springsteen is still developing the very sound and song-writing skills that have been an influence for so many others. And if 2007′s Magic is any representation of the current state of the native New Jerseyan (accompanied again with the legendary E Street Band), he’s still alive and kicking with the same fury and passion that was present in Born to Run some 30 years ago. In fact, songs like “Livin’ In the Future” and “Long Walk Home” sound as if they would fit perfectly on the legendary album. As a whole however, Magic is almost a compilation of Springsteen’s sounds and styles through his career. From the Nebraska sounding “Magic” to “Girls In Summer Clothes,” a song with very a the same type of melody found on The Rising, there is something for every type of Springsteen fan.

All 12 of Magic‘s tracks are gems, which is just another attribute of Springsteen’s talents. In fact, there has never been a need for filler in any of his albums because even when the sounds are simple and the musicality isn’t great, the song-writing remains out of this world. Though no songs on Magic fit this description, the album certain exemplifies The Boss’ masterful, vivid, story-like lyrics. “Long Walk Home,” one of the album’s lyrical high points is a metaphor for Springsteen’s belief on how far the United States has swayed from it’s principals. Even the album’s most furious and powerful tune “Radio Nowhere,” offers a fun, yet discouraging look at the dwindling state of mainstream music. No topic is left untapped. Springsteen is truly one of the world’s last great spokesman. It’s no wonder so many are trying to emulate him.

Since the conception of this blog, I've sure done my share of postings on Bruce Springsteen. It's not just because I grew up in a household where his discography was constantly blasted into my ears.
I don’t really think I fully realized the talents and overall quality of LCD Soundsystem until I saw them live. I initially listened to Sound of Silver and thought, “wow, this is some catchy, little dance music.” Yet, I doubt at that time that I thought nine months later I’d be writing about it as the third best album of 2007. However, this was before I saw James Murphy and company play with Arcade Fire in October. Though I referred to it as “Arcade Fest 2007,” it was LCD Soundsystem who stole the show. They were just full of passion and raw energy, and even in a field surrounded by 20,000 people, the sound just overwhelmed me. After the show, I raced back home to give Sound of Silver another shot.

Sound of Silver is an infectious dance album full of unique instrumentations that produce equally strange rhythms. That’s probably the most simple way you can put it. Add this to the humorous, but eccentric lyrics and vocals of Murphy and LCD Soundsystem is creating some of the most entertaining music around. While the Sound of Silver is less complicated and more mainstream friendly in sound than 2005′s s/t debut, it’s still just as unique and full of the trademark inside references and name drops that lead to more confusion that clarity. What more, it’s one of those albums that even after listening to 10 times, you’ll discover some new sound or rhythm you’ve never heard before on the 11th listen. And sometimes that’s not even enough. For example, it wasn’t until seeing them live did I hear the beauty of the bongos and bells in “Us v Them” that gives the song just another layer of feeling.

Seeing LCD Soundsystem live gave me a greater appreciation for their music and I certainly believe that listening to them on a CD or mp3 doesn’t at all give them justice. With that being said, it’s still hard to deny the quality of Sound of Silver. It’s a representation of true musical talent and some of the best dance music since…um…Daft Punk? But until you see them live, as great as this album is, well let’s just say, you’re missing out.

I’ll be honest. Before hearing The Stage Names, I was fairly unfamiliar with Okkervil River. I had heard them a few times around, but never had really gave them a honest listen. But after hearing their 2007 album, I was hooked. It’s everything one could want in an album – passionate and vivid lyrics, intense and compelling sound and an unbelievable underlying theme. I think Popmatters put it best saying, “part of [Will] Sheff’s new statement seems to be that music—as a cohesive factor, as a meaning for life—is a valid alternative to despair. The Stage Names is just one of those albums where music does all the talking. Even in the darkest of lyrical themes, it has a way of reminding you that, music can bring about some good.

The sound of The Stage Names is both powerful and fierce, but also soft and pleasant. Though I didn’t do rankings, the album’s first track, “Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe” is easily my choice for song of the year. The song almost sets the mood and the theme for the rest of the album. With the lyrics “It’s just a life story, so there’s no climax./No more new territory, so pull away the imax,” Sheff and company assert the idea that life is not at all like a movie. It’s full of despair, agony and suffering. Yet blending with these heartfelt ideas is the melodies of catchy guitar riffs that sound almost like they are getting louder throughout the song. And it is this intensity and passion that presents the idea of music as an alternative. You almost become overcomed by it’s rocky nature and forget about the actual message being conveyed.

Yet in the next song “Unless It Kicks”, Sheff discuses the almost at times overwhelming nature of music, “What breaks this heart the most is the ghost of some rock and roll fan/Exploding up from the stands.” This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though because through music, no one will ever be truly alone. And this is truly what makes The Stage Names great. It conveys what all of us, who are music fans, have thought at one point or another. But it does it with thought provoking lyrics and a beautiful, full sound.

<content:mobile>#4 - Okkervil River - The Stage Names

I'll be honest. Before hearing The Stage Names, I was fairly unfamiliar with Okkervil River. I had heard them a few times around, but never had really gave them a honest listen. But after hearing their 2007 album, I was hooked. It's everything one could want in an album - passionate and vivid lyrics, intense and compelling sound and an unbelievable underlying theme. I think Popmatters put it best saying, "part of [Will] Sheff’s new statement seems to be that music—as a cohesive factor, as a meaning for life—is a valid alternative to despair. The Stage Names is just one of those albums where music does all the talking. Even in the darkest of lyrical themes, it has a way of reminding you that, music can bring about some good.

The sound of The Stage Names is both powerful and fierce, but also soft and pleasant. Though I didn't do rankings, the album's first track, "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe" is easily my choice for song of the year. The song almost sets the mood and the theme for the rest of the album. With the lyrics "It’s just a life story, so there’s no climax./No more new territory, so pull away the imax," Sheff and company assert the idea that life is not at all like a movie. It's full of despair, agony and suffering. Yet blending with these heartfelt ideas is the melodies of catchy guitar riffs that sound almost like they are getting louder throughout the song. And it is this intensity and passion that presents the idea of music as an alternative. You almost become overcomed by it's rocky nature and forget about the actual message being conveyed.

Yet in the next song "Unless It Kicks", Sheff discuses the almost at times overwhelming nature of music, "What breaks this heart the most is the ghost of some rock and roll fan/Exploding up from the stands." This isn't necessarily a bad thing though because through music, no one will ever be truly alone. And this is truly what makes The Stage Names great. It conveys what all of us, who are music fans, have thought at one point or another. But it does it with thought provoking lyrics and a beautiful, full sound.

Anyone who frequents this site can tell that I have a fascination with former Libertine and current Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty. I don’t really know why, but there’s just something that makes him so compelling and interesting. And no it’s not the rampant drug use or tabloid lifestyle. He always seems to have had an unbelievable ability to write and create good music and like him or not, it’s hard to deny the talents of Doherty. And fortunately, he found some time to straighten up and make one hell of an album.

Perhaps the biggest criticism of the Babyshambles’ debut album Down in Albion was that it was too messy, disorganized, and seemed thrown together. Shotter’s Nation is quite the opposite as it reflects some of Doherty’s most focused sound since his Libertines days. The sound of the band is tight. Doherty’s voice is astonishingly strong. And the lyrics, though still autobiographical stories telling of the times and troubles of the frontman’s life, are smarter and more passionate. His song-writing is more real, more vivid, and more beautiful than ever. The song “The Lost Art of Murder,” uses imagery and references to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” to allude to Doherty’s rampant drugs that has left him alone and without love. No topic is left untouched.

Doherty offers nothing groundbreaking. It’s the same sounds, same song-writing abilities that we’ve experienced throughout his career. But Shotter’s Nation does show his true potential. Just a bit of sobriety led to an album full of catchy music and some of the most profound lyrics of the year. Who knows what could result if Doherty completely turned his life around. Hopefully one day, we’ll find out.

Anyone who frequents this site can tell that I have a fascination with former Libertine and current Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty. I don't really know why, but there's just something that makes him so compelling and interesting. And no it's not the rampant drug use or tabloid lifestyle. He always seems to have had an unbelievable ability to write and create good music and like him or not, it's hard to deny the talents of Doherty. And fortunately, he found some time to straighten up and make one hell of an album.

Perhaps the biggest criticism of the Babyshambles' debut album Down in Albion was that it was too messy, disorganized, and seemed thrown together. Shotter's Nation is quite the opposite as it reflects some of Doherty's most focused sound since his Libertines days.
Icky Thump can easily be considered the most fun and enjoyable album of 2007. Everything relating to the album’s release, from the camera promotion to the Beck collaborated b-sides were just fascinating to experience and write about. Yet, it’s the remarkable guitar playing of Jack White and the catchy drum beats of his “little sister” Meg that still produce some of the infectious music around, and what continues to separate them from nearly every other of those “rock bands”. What makes Icky Thump different from previous White Stripes’ albums is it’s fullness and expanded musicality. After all, who would of thought we’d ever hear bagpipes or the sound of a mariachi band on an album from a band has made their reputation from the fury of an electric guitar?

And this is where you have to give Jack White credit. Without a doubt, I enjoy listening to no one more playing their respective instrument than Jack White. Is he in the same class as Hendrix, Clapton, or Jimmy Page? Probably not, but there is just something about the the way he plays his guitar. And more often than not, it’s the sound of the guitar, and not the vocals of White that does most of the talking for the band. While Icky Thump certainly has it’s share of rock tunes, you have to give White credit for his experimentation. And as it turned out, two of the albums most diverse song, “Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn” and “Conquest” turned out to be two of it’s best. In the end however, it’s “Rag & Bone” that steals the show, and what exemplifies everything great about the White Stripes – the positive energy, the witty, but still smart lyrics, and the typical astonishing guitar solo. Even in their most experimenting of states, Icky Thump still show why they’re one of our best modern day rock bands.

Icky Thump can easily be considered the most fun and enjoyable album of 2007. Everything relating to the album's release, from the camera promotion to the Beck collaborated b-sides were just fascinating to experience and write about.

While he’s not quite maturing in the same sense as Conor Obrest, Ryan Adams has certainly been trying to achieve more self-control as of late. He has apparently found sobriety and seems to hold a desire for more organization and clarity when it comes to his music career. Sure, he’s remains eccentric and if the D.J. Reggie videos tell you anything, Adams is certainly still has a love for experimentation. But Easy Tiger exemplifies this new found organization. More than any other album in his discography, it is concise, focused and full of direction. However, it’s an album that can appease any Adams’ fans. Exhibiting the characteristic and ever popular Adam’s alt-country sound, Easy Tiger still packs a rock punch and extraordinary lyrics.

But besides all the characteristics that we have been accustomed to when talking about any work of Ryan Adams, Easy Tigers offers something else. Maybe it’s the sobriety, but the album exhibits some of Adams best vocals to date. What more, though unacknowledged, the musical backing of The Cardinals allows for a tight and full sound, an aspect that has sometimes has been missed in past albums. While maybe not his best album, Easy Tiger offers the world yet another perspective of the talent and potential that is Ryan Adams. His career has brought about so much musical brilliance. And fortunately there is still so much more to come.

 <content:mobile>#7 - Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger

While he's not quite maturing in the same sense as Conor Obrest, Ryan Adams has certainly been trying to achieve more self-control as of late. He has apparently found sobriety and seems to hold a desire for more organization and clarity when it comes to his music career. Sure, he's remains eccentric and if the D.J. Reggie videos tell you anything, Adams is certainly still has a love for experimentation. But Easy Tiger exemplifies this new found organization. More than any other album in his discography, it is concise, focused and full of direction. However, it's an album that can appease any Adams' fans. Exhibiting the characteristic and ever popular Adam's alt-country sound, Easy Tiger still packs a rock punch and extraordinary lyrics.

But besides all the characteristics that we have been accustomed to when talking about any work of Ryan Adams, Easy Tigers offers something else. Maybe it's the sobriety, but the album exhibits some of Adams best vocals to date.

No one translates their energy, passion, and intensity into music more than Ted Leo. Both on and off the stage, Leo is one of the hardest working men in music and Living with the Living is just his latest example of musical excellence. As usual, the album features Leo’s trademark catchy rifts and exemplary song-writing ability. Like always, Leo analyzes all aspects of life from the happiness of love to the heartbreak despair. He’s of course also a bit rebellious, conveying much of his anti-war, anti-government attitudes. Yet, in the end, as great a song-writer that he is, it’s the music that helps him do the talking.

Living with the Living’s sound is Leo’s most experimental to date. As a result, each of the album’s 15 tracks are unique and distinct in sound. There is essentially something for any type of music fan, from the reggae-heavy “The Unwanted Things” to the punky “La Costa Brava”. But, more than anything, the various sounds and musicality of the album complement Leo’s lyrics and allow each song to convey a profound theme that is presented both through sound and word. For example, the politically charged “Bomb.Repeat.Bomb.” literally sounds like a war – both in the clashing of furious guitar and bass rifts and passionate, but lively and loud vocals of Leo. Each song is like it’s own distinct story. And both through word and sound, Ted Leo is the best when it comes to storytellers.

In some sense, Writer’s Block is the quintessential pop album. With melodic harmonies, catchy guitar riffs, and love-analyzing lyrics, Peter Bjorn and John created an album with a heart-warming, easy listening sound. But it’s the band’s experimentation that features the addition of synthesizers, steal drums, and the likes of whistling provided by Bjorn Yttling that allow Writer’s Block to become one of the most musically unique albums of the year.

Though highlighted by a vocal appearance by Victoria Bergsman on “Young Folks” and the catchy vocal hooks of “Objects of My Affection,” it’s hard to find any flaw on Writer’s Block. Each of its 11 tracks compliments each other both musically and in upbeat nature, almost as if the album is just one, long pop song. Writer’s Block is so infectious that it has even transcended music lines, as everyone from Kayne West to Girl Talk have sampled it.
Conor Obrest is perhaps the best example of artists who is maturing before our very eyes. Cassadaga marked Obrest’s transition into sobriety and exploration of life. The album’s sound is fuller and at times, more uplifting than past Bright Eyes’ albums. What more, Obrest gives his best vocal performance to date on the album. Gone is the whining and complaining, replaced with soul searching and questioning. For awhile, Obrest has been considered today’s generation best lyricist, our modern day version of Bob Dylan. In Cassadaga, Obrest improves on the aspect of his sound that always seemed to be a bit weak – the overall musicality of his band. What resulted was the band’s most talented and developed sound ever. Add this to the continued exemplary song-writing of Obrest, and you have Bright Eyes most ingenius work yet.

On Cassadaga, Obrest questions nearly every component of our lives. From politics to religion, nothing is spared by the former child prodigy. Yet, instead of overshadowing the album like they have in the past, the vocals of Obrest blend with each melody. Despite the despair, the loneliness, and the tangents, Obrest delivers a folk rock album that is both musically beatiful and full of meaning. And as a result, Obrest has essentially transformed into the voice of a generation. In the same way as Dylan, Young, Bragg, and Springsteen, Obrest has learned to use the expression of both music and words to convey the thoughts and opinions we all hold at one point or another.

There is no question that Arcade Fire are one of the most talented bands currently out there. Their music has been described as ground breaking and life changing. But over the last year, my opinions toward them had waned. For some reason, maybe because of the magazine articles or the letdown of a live show, my feelings toward them soured and I sensed Win Butler was becoming egotistic and not at all humbled by his success. But after reading the November issue of Spin featuring Butler and Bruce Springsteen, I realized that maybe I was being a tad bit judgmental.

Butler and Arcade Fire have essentially been christened the saviors of today’s music generation. Whether you agree with it or not, when they have the likes of Springsteen and David Bowie proclaiming their greatness, the band has certainly been put on a high pedestal. And that’s got to be a lot of pressure. But if Neon Bible gave any indication, the band has seemed to flourish under this pressure. The sound is darker and ever more powerful. With an orchestral feeling and religious heavy lyrics, it’s almost as if you’re listening to the musical equivalent of a religious revival. Maybe Butler isn’t the most modest when it comes to speaking his mind, but if you take one thing away from Neon Bible, it’s that Arcade Fire’s euphoric, passionate sound honors the Springsteens and the Bowies in the same way that these legends rave about the Canadian natives today. It’s just through music and not words.

And that's got to be a lot of pressure. But if Neon Bible gave any indication, the band has seemed to flourish under this pressure. The sound is darker and ever more powerful. With an orchestral feeling and religious heavy lyrics, it's almost as if you're listening to the musical equivalent of a religious revival. Maybe Butler isn't the most modest when it comes to speaking his mind, but if you take one thing away from Neon Bible, it's that Arcade Fire's euphoric, passionate sound honors the Springsteens and the Bowies in the same way that these legends rave about the Canadian natives today. It's just through music and not words.

Colour It In, the debut album of UK natives The Maccabees ,is far from groundbreaking, but it is perhaps the catchiest album of 2007. Taking inspiration from nearly everyone you can think of, from The Futureheads to Blur, Weezer to The Strokes, The Maccabees play with the same guitar riffs and bouncy beats that describes the sound of nearly every new indie band from Britain. But it’s the lively and youthful vocals of frontman Orlando Weeks, which blend almost perfectly with the the band’s catchy melodies on nearly every song, that separates them into a class of their own. More than anything, The Maccabees are just fun. The lyrics of Colour It In detail relatable everyday struggles, the sound makes you just want to nod your head along. It’s nothing complicated or complex, it’s just fun music. And sometimes, that’s the best kind.

Sure, the catchy as hell drum beats and the Strokes meets Libertines-esque sound are still prevelant, but the album is darker, faster, and much heavier than it’s predecessor. What more, the at times timid vocals of Turner on Whatever are now stronger and passionate. Life stories are conveyed, Turner’s personal desires revealed. Since day one, the Arctic Monkeys have done nothing but improve in all areas of their musicianship and it will certainly be fun to watch and see what happens next.

Many have deemed Rilo Kiley as the modern reincarnation of Fleetwood Mac. (Though I guess that doesn’t really make sense since Fleetwood Mac is still hanging in there.) Regardless, it’s hard to disagree with that notion after the release of Under the Blacklight, which prominently features a soulful and experimental nature that is eerily similar to Stevie Nicks and company. The album also marks Jenny Lewis transformation into a star. Like it not, guitarist Blake Sennett has essentially given up the vocal spotlight to Lewis and her astonishing voice, which has resulted in a more passionate and at times, seductive sound. Under the Blacklight also marks a continuation in the band’s attempt at diversity, evident in the disco-sounding “Breakin’ Up” and the funk meets rock “The Moneymaker”. Overall, it’s a total package of sound that could very well go down as a modern classic.

Many have deemed Rilo Kiley as the modern reincarnation of Fleetwood Mac. (Though I guess that doesn't really make sense since Fleetwood Mac is still hanging in there.) Regardless, it's hard to disagree with that notion after the release of Under the Blacklight, which prominently features a soulful and experimental nature that is eerily similar to Stevie Nicks and company. The album also marks Jenny Lewis transformation into a star. Like it not, guitarist Blake Sennett has essentially given up the vocal spotlight to Lewis and her astonishing voice, which has resulted in a more passionate and at times, seductive sound. Under the Blacklight also marks a continuation in the band's attempt at diversity, evident in the disco-sounding "Breakin' Up" and the funk meets rock "The Moneymaker". Overall, it's a total package of sound that could very well go down as a modern classic.

Les Savy Fav is probably the coolest band around. And while there was a six year span between the release of Go Forth and Let’s Stay Friends, whose complaining? Since we last heard them on disc, the band has gotten tighter, the song-writing has improved, and frontman Tim Harrington is just as eccentric, all which make for a win-win combination. The album truly documents Les Savy Fav at their peak. It’s over the top and intense in sound as you would expect. Yet at the same time, the band finds a way to keep it smart as throughout the album, they continually try to expand their horizons and press the limits of their musicality. Album highlights include the quite experimental “Brace Yourself” and the ferocious “The Year Before The Year 2000″ that can only be fully appreciated with the sound on high.

The album truly documents Les Savy Fav at their peak. It's over the top and intense in sound as you would expect. Yet at the same time, the band finds a way to keep it smart as throughout the album, they continually try to expand their horizons and press the limits of their musicality. Album highlights include the quite experimental "Brace Yourself" and the ferocious "The Year Before The Year 2000" that can only be fully appreciated with the sound on high.

Yes, the album is entitled Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew’s Spirit If…, but let’s be honest. The album contains just as much of a group collaboration than any of the previous BSS albums. The only time Drew is actually solo is in the album title. That’s not to say that Kevin Drew’s presence on the album is not exceptional. His song-writing and vocals are exemplary. But just as in every BSS album, it’s the sound as a whole that separates the band in a class of their own. Broken Social Scene have the unique ability to change the texture of a song in a moments notice, and they’re the only band who can make softness and loudness equally powerful. The beauty of the band is their ability to together make some of the most impactful music around. And, I’m sure Drew realized this. Why else would there be more cameos than songs? So lets just scrap the whole solo idea…

Many seem to be forgetting that The Good, the Bad & the Queen did indeed come out in 2007, January 22 to be exact, which is a shame as it is one of the best debut albums in recent history. While I suppose we shouldn’t be all too surprised since it comes from a (unnamed) group composed of members from Blur, The Clash, and The Verve, the album is probably much darker in sound and lyrically cynical than anyone expected. But it is this disconsolate message that makes it so unique. After all, the group somehow created an album that though dark and doomful, is melodic and catchy, and an enjoyable listen. Music really hasn’t seen anything like this in quite some time. Among highlights is the particularly gloomy “Kingdom of Doom” and the Blur-esque “Herculean”.

I know I’m going to get some flack for this, but I have to be honest. Radiohead’s In Rainbows is an above average album. But was it a top 10 album of 2007? I just have to say no. Personally, the album didn’t blow me away. Sure, there are some gems on it, particularly “Bodysnatchers”, “Jigsaw Falling Into Place”, and “Videotape”. But I’ve heard better from them and at times, it feels a too “jammy” for Radiohead’s standards. Regardless, any album made by Radiohead is always going to be very good and it’s truly difficult to find many flaws in any of their work. Plus, you have to give them props for taking the lead in revolutionizing the music industry.

In may aspects, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is the most unique and confusing album of 2007. After dealing with some rather turbulent time, Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes made this album his emotional self-narrative. The first half of the album is full of upbeat, melodic pop songs similar to the tracks of the band’s previous two albums. But the dark, mystical 12-minute appropriately named “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal” serves as the album’s turning point, which then descends into more experimental and deeper sound. It’s almost as if Barnes wrote the first half of the album sober and the second half, well…high out of his mind on some sort of drug, a state that is chronicled in much of the album’s lyrics. Perhaps it would be best to say, the album is just as complex and conflicted as it’s creator. But, it’s not like I’m complaining…

In may aspects, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is the most unique and confusing album of 2007. After dealing with some rather turbulent time, Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes made this album his emotional self-narrative. The first half of the album is full of upbeat, melodic pop songs similar to the tracks of the band's previous two albums. But the dark, mystical 12-minute appropriately named "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" serves as the album's turning point, which then descends into more experimental and deeper sound. It's almost as if Barnes wrote the first half of the album sober and the second half, well...high out of his mind on some sort of drug, a state that is chronicled in much of the album's lyrics. Perhaps it would be best to say, the album is just as complex and conflicted as it's creator. But, it's not like I'm complaining...

Sure, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the fifth studio album of Modest Mouse, is more mainstream appealing than all of their past works. There’s less quirkiness, less inaudible screaming from frontman Issac Brock. But that doesn’t mean the album lacks the band’s unique sound. Modest Mouse is probably the only band that can make music sound so catchy and frantic at the same time as the furious guitar rifts, the fantastical vocals of Brock, always seem to somehow mesh. The addition of former Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr also has an easily heard impact on the band’s overall musicality, which allows Modest Mouse to be even better than they were before – something that certainly seems far-fetched.

Apostle of Hustle is another one of those band’s who released a debut album that many expected would be hard to top. While this may be true, National Anthem of Nowhere is pretty solid in it’s own right. The diverse instrumentations and sounds always seem to blend together beautifully in every track, a bit reminiscent of that other well-known Canadian band that frontman Andrew Whiteman happens to be in. The album also has an incredible way of being both powerful and soft at the same time, an attribute that can be seen for example in the album’s title track. Oh, and it helps that the vocals of Whiteman are some of the best out there.
Exhibiting an energetic, pop-punk sound and equally fun lyrics, the album is what you would expect if the Arctic Monkeys or The Hives took music steroids. And this is what puts The Fratellis in a class of their own. Their energy and enthusiasm is like no other. And like all of Chao’s albums, La Radiolina is full of political sentiments. You don’t need to understand Spanish to hear his attacks, but Chao does it in such a way, that they are more words of hope than of negativity.
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga truly exhibits almost every characteristic that defines Spoon as a band. The quirky, but melodic guitar rhythms mixed with repetitive, catchy baselines and poppy piano parts that makes up a large put of their sound is clearly present. The unbelievable song-writing talents and vocals of Brit Daniels is as well. Even the at times rather eccentric attitudes the band exhibits both live and behind the scenes probably was the basis for the album’s strange title. But more than anything, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga exemplifies the immense talents of Spoon and is just another stellar album in the band’s unbelievable discography.

Sure, they’re aren’t as many standout songs and they seem to have gone back to a standard garage rock sound.
