Patrick Stump’s inclusion on the 2011 Lollapalooza lineup elicited a fairly unanimous response of “um, what?” Hailing from emo-kings Fall Out Boy just comes with that kind of baggage, but Stump is doing his best to plead his case as a solo act, and he’s making quite an intriguing one at that.

Furthering his argument is the charged up “Explode”, the latest tease of his late-summer release Soul Punk. Loaded with electronics, the track hits you with those Jackson-esque pipes atop a bombardment of synthesized sounds. Lyrics like “he was a living, breathing action screen-play cliché” and “if I’m never your hero, I can never let you down” tell the story of a modern man so fed up with the state of things that he’s willing to, well, explode, and take it all with him.

Is it going to be everyone’s cup of tea? Probably not. Will it make some second-guess skipping his Lolla set? Just maybe.
Since Fall Out Boy “ended,” Pete Wentz has gone dance, and Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley have gone metal. Singer Patrick Stump is taking his post-FOB career in a funkier direction. His debut album, Soul Punk, may have been pushed back to the summer, but Stump’s first EP, entitled Truant Wave, is dropping February 22nd. Thanks to Some Kind of Awesome, you can preview the first song from the release now. “Cute Girls” is surprising enough that you might not know what to do with it upon first listen. At times it sounds so much like Michael Jackson, from dipping and rising pitch progressions to vibrating growls, that it’s as if Stump is possessed by the late King of Pop. Produced by and featuring Om’mas Keith, this funky pop track has made the competition for best ex-FOB member project a lot more interesting. Who do you think will pull ahead of the others?
After a brief delay, the record arrives in February.

The members of what used to be Fall Out Boy have scattered in all directions since the band’s demise hiatus. Joseph Trohman and Andy Hurley have formed heavy metal band The Damned Things with members of Anthrax and Pete Wentz is busy… being Pete Wentz. As for frontman Patrick Stump? He’s following in the footsteps of guys like Julian Casablancas and Brandon Flowers and embarking on a solo project, with his debut album, Soul Punk, set to drop February 2011.

Stump originally announced the album way back in February, but his desire for perfection caused a bit of a delay. “I just want to make sure I go to sleep at night knowing I’m not half-assing this,” Stump told MTV News. He also noted that this delay caused a change in the album’s style, explaining that the sound “changed dramatically” since he told fans he was moving more into a funk direction.

With the album now completed, Stump promises that fans will soon be able to hear the track titled “Spotlight”. In the meantime, you can check out the song’s handwritten lyrics on his website.
Throw in a little Every Time I Die for good measures.

Seems like everyone’s getting in on this supergroup thing nowadays, with new ones popping up every day. Pete Wentz may be off doing his thing, but Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman got there first - it just took him a bit longer to release a song. At last, he and Scott Ian of Anthrax have released the first listen of their new metal supergroup, The Damned Things.

Okay, FOB doing metal doesn’t quite sound right, but add in Ian’s Anthrax bandmate guitarist Rob Caggiano, and vocalist Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die, and you just might have something. Stick FOB drummer Andy Hurley back there and the band is complete. Oh, and you’ve also got touring bassist Josh Newton from ETID (Caggiano recorded the bass on the record). Stacked? Yeah, just a bit. The group, touting a heavy Thin Lizzy influence, was unveiled back in June with twin concerts in New York and London. Now we’ve got an introductory video and two new songs on the MySpace page.

I’ll be honest: metal isn’t really my bag of chips. Back in the day, you’d likely catch me listening to FOB before ETID. Still, these tracks surprised me by making me give a few mini-head bangs . They’re full of furiously fast riffs, great vocals, and are all around pretty intriguing. This is especially true for lead single “We’ve Got A Situation Here”, which features a hook that really does its job sinking its claws into your brain. I may not be a metal-head, but this stuff has my ears opened for what this supergroup does next. Plus, I finally have something to talk about with my metal-inclined friends.

Spy the introductory video below, which explains how these guys came together. You can also hear the single and the title track of their December 14th debut, Ironiclast. Both tracks will be released on a 7” and CD single on November 26th. You can also try to catch the band on a quick jaunt with only two state-side stops: October 28th in LA, and the 30th in Sauget, IL. Got all those dates? Good. Keep it here and check out the band’s website for more and updated information.

Is your face scorched yet?

According to NME, the newest game will feature some of the heaviest rockers in the music world, including AFI, DragonForce, Drowning Pool, Foo Fighters, KISS, Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, The Rolling Stones, and many others. Not to mention, there’ll be slightly less intense acts to rock with, like Muse, Queen, and Silversun Pickups. And somehow Foreigner and Night Ranger made it to the final list, which you can peep below. Speaking of KISS, the developers also created a storyline mode that’s narrated by KISS’ own Gene Simmons. So, expect lots of bad sexual innuendos, gamers.

And Jesus wept...

Remember 2005? The days that were owned by the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco? Do you remember where you were? Were you basking in the post-punk glory, wearing skin tight jeans, faded ’80s throwback shirts, and bucket hats? Or, were you scoffing at it all? C’mon, it’s not too far back to remember. Odds are readers, you were doing one or the other. With that in mind, this piece of news will either make you jump for joy or reach for tissues: Patrick Stump has quit Fall Out Boy.

It all started with a Twitter message, started by bassist Pete Wentz, who on Monday, ignited the drama with the following” “A hiatus is forever until you get lonely or old. I don’t plan on either. I can’t imagine playing in FOB again.” It didn’t take long for everyone to react to that little bit… including the band’s members.

That’s when Spin caught up with Stump, who remarked, “I’m not in Fall Out Boy right now. But one way or another, the band will always be around. Steven Tyler isn’t in Aerosmith anymore, but his gravestone will probably say something about Aerosmith. Whether we play again or not, I don’t know. If we do, it will be for the right reasons. If we don’t, it will also be for the right reasons.”

Stump, instead, insists that he wants to focus on his solo career.

“I’m really not worried about Fall Out Boy,” Stump said. “I’m so psyched about where I’m at right now, recording this solo album.” He’s not alone, either. All four members of the Chicago-based band are currently involved in other projects, as well.

However, that doesn’t change the guys’ feelings, as drummer Andy Hurley comments via his message board for his Minneapolis band Fuck City, “I really wish I could tell everyone if we were done or not. But I just don’t know. It’s not looking great right now… Pete loves fob. I love fob. Patrick loves fob. and Joe loves fob. It’s just that we’re in different places…”

This morning, in a fit of nostalgia that only begs for more questions, Wentz posted an old photo of the band with the caption, “I miss truck stops and sneaking nachos.”

We’ll miss neither, but we’ll keep you posted as this unfolds.

Contrary to the ill will of any who have outgrown Blink-182 or Fall Out Boy, two things can be said in a positive light: Blink bassist Mark Hoppus has a lot of pop-punk experience under his belt, and Wentz has a knack for vocabulary in his lyrics. Now, the two different (but not that different) schools in their genre have combined forces for a track on the upcoming soundtrack to Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, which is due in theaters this March.

Of the currently untitled piece, Wentz gave the following statement to MTV (Kerrang!):

“The track sounds nothing like Blink or Fall Out Boy,” Wentz told MTV. “Mark understands songwriting on a completely different level. It’s awesome to have a chance to sit in a room with him and watch him work out a melody.”

While I can give kudos to Wentz’s humbling respect and fandom toward Hoppus, and in some small way am curious as to the end result of such a partnership, the modicum of anticipation is doused in the news that All Time Low will also contribute music to the soundtrack. Bright side? We can safely assume that Alice In Wonderland itself–also featuring Burton favorites like Johnny Depp, Bonham Carter, and composer Danny Elfman–will carry enough acid-laced imagery to lick any current malaise away.

Bring it on, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum! (Yes, we are not above lame AiW jokes here.)

Before we turn the page on the 2000s, we wanted to take one more look at the year that was the last 365 days.

The year 2009 marked the final chapter in what had been music’s most fascinating decade. But we don’t have to tell you that — the examples speak for themselves. A combination of Internet protocol, aka BitTorrents, and a band named Radiohead led to the destruction of the music industry as we knew it. A rapper from Chicago managed to become both the most talented and the most despised individual on Earth, while a Detroit rocker proved this generation could have a sure-fire Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall-of-Famer. The Grammys became a joke and something called a “blog” became required reading. Oh, and not only did Amy Winehouse manage to make it out of this decade alive, but so too did Pete Doherty.

As for 2009? Well, the Dirty Projectors became a household name, as did Twitter, Girl Talk turned into a gimmick, Kanye continued to be an asshole, online music streaming got big (and bought), and the sales of digital and vinyl releases continued to increase, while the Virgin Megastores and Sam Goody’s of the world went bye bye.

And that’s not even scratching the surface. Before we turn the page on the 2000s, we wanted to take one more look at the year that was the last 365 days. Music, here was your 2009…

Headline Grabbers

There is always a few particular artists who seem to appear in the headlines more than others. Take these three for example:

Lil Wayne appeared on ESPN, began work on a rock ‘n’ roll album, talked gangsta with Katie Couric, won some Grammys, released the worst song ever, pushed back the release of his rock ‘n’ roll album, pushed back the release of his rock ‘n’ roll album again, told kids to stay in school, teamed up with Madonna, collaborated with Kanye, Eminem, and Drake, promised two albums before the year was out, plead guilty to weapon possession, released a stellar mixtape, watched his mom get a TV show, had his rock ‘n’ roll album mistakenly leaked, and got arrested again, all while actually failing to release any studio albums at all before the year was out. And to cap it all off, he’s going to prison in February!

For a band that didn’t release an album in 2009, Radiohead sure managed to grab quite a few headlines. Capitol Records reissued their discography, Thom Yorke debuted a new song, as well as contributed to the New Moon soundtrack, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway collaborated with Neil Finn and Wilco, the entire band got together to release a tribute song for Harry Patch, the last surviving World War I combat soldier, Thom Yorke covered Mark Mulcahy’s “All for the Best”, the entire band got together again to release a track titled “These Are My Twisted Words”, Thom Yorke offered a secret 12″, Thom Yorke formed a new band and played some shows, the entire band got together for a third time to begin work on a new studio album, and Thom Yorke became really pissed about climate change.

You either loved or hated the amount of U2 present in 2009. Bono and crew got on their boots, played the Grammys, resided on Letterman, released a new album, teamed up with Brandon Flowers and Chris Martin, started talking another new album, took to Fordham University for a secret show, embarked on the first leg of their claw-featuring global 360 tour, tapped Muse as an opener, wrote a Broadway musical about Spider-Man, pissed off David Byrne, got reviewed in Chicago, reissued The Unforgettable Fire, apparently made no money, played the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall-of-Fame anniversary, titled their next album, wanted to be like The Beatles, plotted more tour dates for 2010, played a free Berlin Wall concert behind the backdrop of a different wall constructed by MTV to prevent those without tickets from watching U2 play a free Berlin Wall concert, teamed up with Jay-Z, got tapped for Glastonbury 2010, and announced a remix album.

Music Festivals

Despite a recession which saw a number of mid-tier summer music festivals call it quits, the big boys were as grand as ever. Coachella rounded up McCartney, Bonnaroo brought The Boss and Phish, and Lollapalooza finally saw Perry using his festival to his advantage. What’s more, Outside Lands proved once again that its a festival to be reckon with, while Sasquatch! demonstrated that Washington state can also rock hard. Hova was able to save All Points West from a mud filled weekend, Pitchfork continued to serve as a hipster’s wet dream, and the Virgin Mobile Festival reminded us that some good things can be free. Finally, Consequence of Sound hit South by Southwest for the first time, celebrating with events featuring the likes of Astronautalis, Gringo Star, Shad, 13ghosts, Kittens Ablaze, Catfish Haven, and Blueblood. Oh, and did we mention we have already begun planning for next year?

Supergroups

By the time December rolled around, there were as many supergroups in existence as there were non-supergroups…

Dave Grohl + John Paul Jones + Josh Homme = Them Crooked Vultures, Conor Oberst + M. Ward + Jim James = Monsters of Folk, Jack White + Alison Mosshart + Jack Lawrence + Dean Fertita = The Dead Weather, Thom Yorke + Flea + Nigel Godrich + Joey Waronker + Mauro Refosco = ???, Phil Lesh + Bob Weir = Furthur, Coldplay + Mew + a-ha = Apparatjik, Supergrass + Radiohead = The Hot Rats, Joe Budden + Joell Ortiz + Royce da 5’9″ + Crooked I = Slaughterhouse, King Khan + Black Lips = The Almighty Defenders, New Order + Blur = Bad Lieutenant, Sammy Hagar + Michael Anthony + Joe Satriani + Chad Smith = Chickenfoot

Reunions, Hiatuses, and Nothing at All!

Two 2009′s biggest themes were bands reuniting and bands calling it quits (or announcing extended hiatuses). And then there were those that couldn’t make up their mind at all.

Blur began its reunion, The Stooges revived Raw Power, Pixies gave it another go, Creed came back!, No Doubt did too, Faith No More hit Europe, Phish returned, The Murder City Devils reunited for Coachella, Sunny Day Real Estate returned for some grunge, Deadheads got the best Christmas present ever, Blink-182 got back together for the kids, Spinal Tap released a new album for the first time in 17 years, Sublime played a show and then got sued, Eminem reunited with D12, Simon and Garfunkel became friends, Limp Bizkit dusted off the red cap, Three members of the Velvet Underground got together for a discussion, Orbital celebrated its 20th anniversary with a reunion, Jawbox made its first live performance since 1997 on J-Fal, Faces reunited without Rod Stewart, while Take That did reunite with Robbie Williams, John Lydon moved on to Public Image Ltd., Cee-Lo got back together with Goodie Mob, The Jayhawks reunited, as did The Gories, and Ben Lee resurrected Noise Addict. Oh yeah, and some band named Pavement announced plans for a busy 2010.

On the other hand, Blur also ended its reunion, The Verve broke up again, Oasis had a fight, Flight of the Conchords called it quits, Music journalism died, Nine Inch Nails said goodbye, as did Harlem Shakes, The Broken West, and Pela, and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Blitzen Trapper, Bon Iver, Lily Allen, Deerhunter, and TV on the Radio all announced lengthy hiatuses.

Plus, we learned an At The Drive-In reunion apparently wasn’t a possibility, nor was the rumored Stone Roses comeback, Spacemen 3 got an offer, but declined, The Kinks kept thinking about it but still didn’t do anything, contrary to Courtney Love’s comments, Hole didn’t reunite, Pulp teased and then unteased, and Swans thought about it and didn’t. And not surprisingly, The Libertines, The Smiths, and Neutral Milk Hotel all continued to tease to no fruition, while Led Zeppelin continued the suspense.

Soundtracks with benefits

There’s nothing like a nice movie soundtrack or benefit album featuring some of our favorite musicians. 2009 exemplified this fact to the max…

Grizzly Bear, LCD Soundsystem, Badly Drawn Boy, Arcade Fire, Karen O and friends, Daft Punk, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Beck, Jay Farrar & Ben Gibbard, British Sea Power, Dengue Fever all provided sounds for the silver screen, as did the inane number of musicians appearing on the New Moon soundtrack.

Ben Gibbard, Fleet Foxes, and The Cave singers contributed to the Give Seattle charity album, while Tom Waits, Pete Seeger, and Jim James lent their talents to Preservation, an Album Benefiting Preservation Hall and Its Music Outreach Program. Our friends at Ear Farm rounded up Tom Tom Club, Sean Bones, tUnE-yArDs for their pro-Xmas Do you EAR what I EAR?. Peter Bjorn & John, Juliette Lewis, and White Rabbits helped fight malaria. The Climate change benefiting Rhythms Del Mundo Classics saw contributions from The Killers, The Rolling Stones, and Amy Winehouse. Stars (like Yorke and The National) collided for Mark Mulcahy. Hot Chip, The Hold Steady, and Lily Allen shared reinterpretations on War Child Heroes. And let’s not forget about Dark Was The Night, the tantalizing 31-track effort featuring the Dirty Projectors with David Byrne, Feist with Ben Gibbard, Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket, and more, all in benefit of The Red Hot Organization and AIDS awareness.

Our Most Memorable Features

In addition to everything else that went down, 2009 also saw Consequence of Sound further expanded our feature stories. The following are some of our favorites/most memorable:

We brought you interviews with Pavement, Ms. Consequence of Sound herself, Regina Spektor, Tom Jones, Passion Pit, Slayer, Ben Kweller, The Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, Hot Water Music, The Von Bondies, The Screaming Blue Messiahs, The Antlers, Boots Riley, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Fleet Foxes’ J. Oh and we talked with Los Campesinos! not once, but twice.

Our Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman gave us the entire story of The Thermals, contributing writer Alyssa Spiel spoke with 311 about its 20th anniversary, and the one and only Cap Blackard spent the day with Astronautalis.

The Year’s Most “Unique” Moments

<content:mobile>The year 2009 marked the final chapter in what had been music's most fascinating decade. But we don't have to tell you that -- the examples speak for themselves. A combination of Internet protocol, aka BitTorrents, and a band named Radiohead led to the destruction of the music industry as we knew it. A rapper from Chicago managed to become both the most talented and the most despised individual on Earth, while a Detroit rocker proved this generation could have a sure-fire Rock 'n' Roll Hall-of-Famer. The Grammys became a joke and something called a "blog" became required reading. Oh, and not only did Amy Winehouse manage to make it out of this decade alive, but so too did Pete Doherty.

As for 2009? Well, the Dirty Projectors became a household name, as did Twitter, Girl Talk turned into a gimmick, Kanye continued to be an asshole, online music streaming got big (and bought), and the sales of digital and vinyl releases continued to increase, while the Virgin Megastores and Sam Goody's of the world went bye bye.

And that's not even scratching the surface. Before we turn the page on the 2000s, we wanted to take one more look at the year that was the last 365 days. Music, here was your 2009...

Headline Grabbers

There is always a few particular artists who seem to appear in the headlines more than others. Take these three for example:

Lil Wayne appeared on ESPN, began work on a rock 'n' roll album, talked gangsta with Katie Couric, won some Grammys, released the worst song ever, pushed back the release of his rock 'n' roll album, pushed back the release of his rock 'n' roll album again, told kids to stay in school, teamed up with Madonna, collaborated with Kanye, Eminem, and Drake, promised two albums before the year was out, plead guilty to weapon possession, released a stellar mixtape, watched his mom get a TV show, had his rock 'n' roll album mistakenly leaked, and got arrested again, all while actually failing to release any studio albums at all before the year was out. And to cap it all off, he's going to prison in February!

For a band that didn't release an album in 2009, Radiohead sure managed to grab quite a few headlines. Capitol Records reissued their discography, Thom Yorke debuted a new song, as well as contributed to the New Moon soundtrack, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway collaborated with Neil Finn and Wilco, the entire band got together to release a tribute song for Harry Patch, the last surviving World War I combat soldier, Thom Yorke covered Mark Mulcahy’s “All for the Best”, the entire band got together again to release a track titled "These Are My Twisted Words", Thom Yorke offered a secret 12", Thom Yorke formed a new band and played some shows, the entire band got together for a third time to begin work on a new studio album, and Thom Yorke became really pissed about climate change.

You either loved or hated the amount of U2 present in 2009. Bono and crew got on their boots, played the Grammys, resided on Letterman, released a new album, teamed up with Brandon Flowers and Chris Martin, started talking another new album, took to Fordham University for a secret show, embarked on the first leg of their claw-featuring global 360 tour, tapped Muse as an opener, wrote a Broadway musical about Spider-Man, pissed off David Byrne, got reviewed in Chicago, reissued The Unforgettable Fire, apparently made no money, played the Rock 'n' Roll Hall-of-Fame anniversary, titled their next album, wanted to be like The Beatles, plotted more tour dates for 2010, played a free Berlin Wall concert behind the backdrop of a different wall constructed by MTV to prevent those without tickets from watching U2 play a free Berlin Wall concert, teamed up with Jay-Z, got tapped for Glastonbury 2010, and announced a remix album.

What's more, Outside Lands proved once again that its a festival to be reckon with, while Sasquatch! demonstrated that Washington state can also rock hard. Hova was able to save All Points West from a mud filled weekend, Pitchfork continued to serve as a hipster's wet dream, and the Virgin Mobile Festival reminded us that some good things can be free.
Supergroups

By the time December rolled around, there were as many supergroups in existence as there were non-supergroups...
Dave Grohl + John Paul Jones + Josh Homme = Them Crooked Vultures, Conor Oberst + M. Ward + Jim James = Monsters of Folk, Jack White + Alison Mosshart + Jack Lawrence + Dean Fertita = The Dead Weather, Thom Yorke + Flea + Nigel Godrich + Joey Waronker + Mauro Refosco = ???, Phil Lesh + Bob Weir = Furthur, Coldplay + Mew + a-ha = Apparatjik, Supergrass + Radiohead = The Hot Rats, Joe Budden + Joell Ortiz + Royce da 5'9" + Crooked I = Slaughterhouse, King Khan + Black Lips = The Almighty Defenders, New Order + Blur = Bad Lieutenant, Sammy Hagar + Michael Anthony + Joe Satriani + Chad Smith = Chickenfoot
Reunions, Hiatuses, and Nothing at All!

Two 2009's biggest themes were bands reuniting and bands calling it quits (or announcing extended hiatuses). And then there were those that couldn't make up their mind at all.

Plus, we learned an At The Drive-In reunion apparently wasn't a possibility, nor was the rumored Stone Roses comeback, Spacemen 3 got an offer, but declined, The Kinks kept thinking about it but still didn't do anything, contrary to Courtney Love's comments, Hole didn't reunite, Pulp teased and then unteased, and Swans thought about it and didn't. And not surprisingly, The Libertines, The Smiths, and Neutral Milk Hotel all continued to tease to no fruition, while Led Zeppelin continued the suspense.
Soundtracks with benefits

There's nothing like a nice movie soundtrack or benefit album featuring some of our favorite musicians. 2009 exemplified this fact to the max...

And let's not forget about Dark Was The Night, the tantalizing 31-track effort featuring the Dirty Projectors with David Byrne, Feist with Ben Gibbard, Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket, and more, all in benefit of The Red Hot Organization and AIDS awareness.
Our Most Memorable Features

In addition to everything else that went down, 2009 also saw Consequence of Sound further expanded our feature stories. The following are some of our favorites/most memorable:

We brought you interviews with Pavement, Ms. Consequence of Sound herself, Regina Spektor, Tom Jones, Passion Pit, Slayer, Ben Kweller, The Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, Hot Water Music, The Von Bondies, The Screaming Blue Messiahs, The Antlers, Boots Riley, Cymbals Eat Guitars, and Fleet Foxes' J. Tillman.

We listed everything from the Top 11 Influential Minds of Industrial Metal and Top 10 Grunge Albums to the Top 10 Fake Bands and Top 10 Sleepiest Albums. We did some Audio Archaeology, dusted off some ol' classics, shared our guilty pleasures, introduced you to some great new bands, and continued teaching Rock History 101.

As for the most commented posts of the year? That honor goes to Laina Dawes' review of 311's Uplifter.
The Year's Most "Unique" Moments

We thought we'd close on a light note, as in this year's stories and moments that, well, left us scratching our heads the most...

Bill Corgan wrote a song for the Super Bowl, Bruce Springsteen apologized for selling music through Walmart, Live Nation and Ticketmaster merged, Mandy Moore married Ryan Adams, Lil Wayne released "Prom Queen", we wrote a post about the Jonas Brothers, Crystal Castles had a meltdown, Santogold had to change her name to Santigold, Manu Chao pissed off Mexico, Chickenfoot was actually real, Prince released a $2,100 iPod, Billy Corgan made a wrestling promo, Tupac revealed he might still be alive, Creed released a new album, Billy Corgan hired a 19-year-old drummer, Kanye West helped kids stay in school, Ron Artest paid homage to Michael Jackson, Reading Music Festival banned flags, Kidz Bop covered Kanye West, Ryan Adams became a video game reviewer, R. Thank you!

Before we end our 2009 recap, we would just like to take one last moment to thank the individuals who have helped Consequence of Sound become what it is today.
Who woulda thunk it?

There were a lot of people racking their brains over what would become of Fall Out Boy following the announcement of its “break”. Well, we’ve gotten a glimpse of the (immediate) future of (half) of the band. And that new project sees them become a new star in the universe of supergroups.

According to Rock Sound (via Idolator), guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley have gotten together with Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano from Anthrax and Keith Buckley and David Karon from Every Time I Die to form The Damned Things. According to Ian, the band’s sound is “Kyuss meeting Thin Lizzy”. Color us intrigued thus far.

“We just started working on songs together and I really dug it,” Ian told Rock Sound of working with Trohman. “It just felt really good. From there we decided that obviously both of us are pretty busy in our day jobs but let’s see what we can do with this. Even if it takes us five years to make a record, why not?”

Thankfully, they didn’t have to wait long and the band has already written 15 songs. Despite their very different musical experiences, Ian said that the often overlooked members of FOB have every right to join the metal lords in the business of rupturing ear drums.

“It’s super fun and it’s something that we do totally take seriously because we love the music we’ve created,” Ian said. “People think of Fall Out Boy and they think of Pete Wentz and Patrick. These two guys, man, they’re fucking hardcore dudes. Joe writes some amazing riffs. We have this song called ‘A Great Reckoning’ that I swear to God, this song could be on any Thin Lizzy record. He fucking blew my mind with this song and I just can’t wait for people to hear it.”

Of course, Trohman is just as gleefully excited to be working with Ian and Buckley. In fact, he’s hoping to expand the ETID singer’s primal range.

“Scott’s right hand is the reason I got into playing punk rock, hardcore and metal!” Trohman said. “Having Keith as part of the mix is insane. We all know he writes incredible lyrics but he is also a really good singer. That is showcased in Every Time I Die, but we want him to go more into singing than screaming on this project.”

The band plans on hitting the studio sometime before Christmas. We’ll update you once their MySpace becomes a bit more fleshed out.

Now, Pete and Patrick, ball’s in your court now, fellas.

<content:mobile>There were a lot of people racking their brains over what would become of Fall Out Boy following the announcement of its "break". Well, we've gotten a glimpse of the (immediate) future of (half) of the band.

According to Ian, the band's sound is "Kyuss meeting Thin Lizzy". Color us intrigued thus far.
"We just started working on songs together and I really dug it," Ian told Rock Sound of working with Trohman. "It just felt really good. From there we decided that obviously both of us are pretty busy in our day jobs but let's see what we can do with this. Even if it takes us five years to make a record, why not?"
Thankfully, they didn't have to wait long and the band has already written 15 songs. Despite their very different musical experiences, Ian said that the often overlooked members of FOB have every right to join the metal lords in the business of rupturing ear drums.
"It's super fun and it's something that we do totally take seriously because we love the music we've created," Ian said. "People think of Fall Out Boy and they think of Pete Wentz and Patrick. These two guys, man, they're fucking hardcore dudes. Joe writes some amazing riffs. We have this song called ‘A Great Reckoning' that I swear to God, this song could be on any Thin Lizzy record. He fucking blew my mind with this song and I just can't wait for people to hear it."
Of course, Trohman is just as gleefully excited to be working with Ian and Buckley. In fact, he's hoping to expand the ETID singer's primal range.
"Scott's right hand is the reason I got into playing punk rock, hardcore and metal!" Trohman said. "Having Keith as part of the mix is insane. We all know he writes incredible lyrics but he is also a really good singer. That is showcased in Every Time I Die, but we want him to go more into singing than screaming on this project."
The band plans on hitting the studio sometime before Christmas. We'll update you once their MySpace becomes a bit more fleshed out.

Now, Pete and Patrick, ball's in your court now, fellas.</content:mobile>

Not a hiatus, not a breakup. Just a break.

Tons of bands have been pulling rank and deciding to take a break for solo projects or to cool down the musical fire. Whether it’s patient zero of TV On The Radio or even the Boss himself, something’s going around. The latest victim? None other than pop-punk giants Fall Out Boy.

The rumors of a break began to circulate earlier this week amidst claims that the band had hit a creative roadblock and after drummer Andy Hurley tweeted that the he and his fellow members were on a hiatus (which was later changed to “break”). Not surprisingly, all this cause a few fans to eventually lose their cool. So, in hopes of answering the question once and for all, guitarist Pete Wentz spoke with MTV yesterday to reveal that Fall Out Boy is indeed on a break. A break… not a hiatus.

“I don’t think I would use the word ‘hiatus’ because I think that word has gotten a dirty name, especially if you say ‘indefinite hiatus… I wouldn’t use the word ‘breakup’ because that’s not true. It’s a break – we’re decompressing. I’m making a new term for it: we’re decompressing right now. We’ve been doing this for eight years straight, where it was pre-recording, record, promo, tour, tour, pre-recording, record, tour, tour, and our band was going to imminently implode.”

The band’s spokesperson further emphasized that Fall Out Boy is not on a hiatus, stating to NME, “It’s a break with an indefinite date when they’re coming back.” To think, all this over a little linguistic snafu.

Ironically, Fall Out Boy recently relived its last eight years with the release of Believers Never Die: Greatest Hits, on Novemeber 17th. It should help ease your wait until that hiatus, er, break is over.

In 2006, inspired by the events of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, a group of high-profile musicians got together for a benefit album. Proceeds from the album went to the nonprofit organization Artists Project Earth, which raises awareness and funds for climate change projects and for disaster relief efforts. The album, titled Rhythms del Mundo Cuba, fused the styles and sounds of Latin American favorites (Buena Vista Social Club) with tracks from U.S. and European artists such as U2, Sting, Coldplay, and the Arctic Monkeys.

Now Rhythms del Mundo is doing it all over again. On August 11th, another batch of music heavyweights will look to change the world with the release of Rhythms Del Mundo Classics. The Killers (covering The Eagles’ “Hotel California”), KT Tunstall, Editors, Augusto Enriquez, One Republic, The Kooks, and Eros Ramazzott recorded songs exclusively for the release.

Also included will be a Latin-flavored twist on previously recorded songs like The Rolling Stones’ “Under the Boardwalk”, Amy Winehouse’s cover of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid”, and John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

<content:mobile>Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, The All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Asher Roth, and Chester French. No, it's not the list of names appearing on the latest Now! album, rather it's who will be accompanying Blink-182 on its upcoming reunion tour. Of course, not all seven acts can play on one night - that would both defy the law of physics and cause some massive headaches, so, everyone's taking a turn. Who and when is surely the question now on everyone's mind, one which has now been solved by the fine folks at Absolute Punk.

48 hours ago, if someone were to ask you about Blink-182‘s upcoming reunion tour, you’d probably say, “Yeah, they’re apparently planning something, but I really haven’t heard what’s going on with it.”

Well, that changed in a hurry. Just a day after the recently reunited trio dropped details on the tour’s openers and desires to be like Daft Punk and Kanye West, Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker, and Tom DeLonge have returned with, yes, kids, actual tour dates, and lots of them. Beginning July 24th in Las Vegas, Blink-182 will embark on a nearly 50 date North American tour that will see the band loop the U.S. and Canada and then some before ultimately ending in Atlantic City on October 3rd.

As previously reported, Weezer and Fall Out Boy are confirmed to serve as openers, as are Panic at the Disco, The All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Asher Roth, and Chester French. No word on who will be opening what date.

Tickets, which according to manager Rick Devoe will be affordable – “If you have $20, you get in. No fees or anything,” will go on sale beginning May 30th via LiveNation.com.

“We want this to be an experience that brings the show out to the audience,” Hoppus adds in a conversation with Rolling Stone. That also means the incorporation of aforementioned light show, which will be designed by Martin Phillip.

Beyond the tour dates, the band does plan to begin work on a brand new studio album, and will hit Europe, along with Australia’s Big Day Out Music Festival later this year.

Got it all that? And I haven’t even mentioned the fact Blink-182 played a surprise performance at the launch party for the new T-Mobile Sidekick at Hollywood’s Paramount Pictures last night – the band’s first “official” live gig in four years. But the reunion tour is indeed still on tap, one which we recently learned a little more about courtesy of this month’s issue of Rolling Stone (via himynameismark).

The band is rehearsing ahead of the tour dates, the first time ever says bassist Mark Hoppus: “We used to walk onstage and forget our parts. We wanted to play fast and look cool. This time, we want to be more artistic.”

And finally, as rumored, Weezer and Fall Out Boy will serve as openers on the tour. Maybe The All-American Rejects too?

A lot can be said about Fall Out Boy‘s recent decision to “invite” 50 Cent on the road with them this month. Some could say its just Universal Music’s attempt to publicize two of its biggest artists, the latter of which will be celebrating a new album this June. Others might point to the fact that it’s simply Fall Out Boy’s attempt to diversify its fans, a sentiment which is certainly backed by frontman Patrick Stump in his comments to Billboard.com: “We’ve encountered a little bit of negative feelings about it…but I think that you should challenge your audience a little bit.” And then there’s the belief, like the one held by yours truly, that’s its a combination of the two, inspired by a fragile 50 Cent looking to expand his market after getting his ass kicked for the last two years by Kanye.

Whatever the case may be, the fact is 50 Cent will be joining Fall Out Boy for five shows during the band’s recently launched “Believers Never Die Part Deux” tour. And while no collaboration between the two marquee names is currently planned, Stump didn’t close the door on the possibility:

“We haven’t really talked about it…but I think a tour kind of has a life of its own. On the first day it’s just like summer camp — you’re really awkward. But by the last day you have your group of friends and you’ve figured yourself out, so who knows? It may happen. I could just as easily see him and Cobra Starship hanging out, so we’ll see.”
