Mega-musicians gather to support the conservation of Tibetan heritage.

Over the last 20 years, composer and co-founder of Tibet House Philip Glass has gathered musicians at Carnegie Hall in support of Tibet House and the preservation of that region’s culture. Last year’s impressive lineup included Iggy Pop, Gogol Bordello, Regina Spektor, and many others. The 21st edition of the Tibet House Benefit concert looks to be equally spectacular now that this year’s lineup has been released.

As always, Glass himself will perform and act as artistic director. The Roots, R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, and James McCartney, son of Paul McCartney, are all scheduled to play the benefit. Singer-songwriter Patti Smith will also participate in her fifth straight appearance, this time with her daughter Jesse and Michael Campbell. Beninese world musician and activist Angelique Kidjo will round out the eclectic lineup.

The annual event is known for its unique collaborations, and this group of artists certainly has some intriguing prospects. Considering the lineup and the good cause, the $33 to $95 price tag seems downright reasonable. Tickets for the March 3rd event are on sale starting today at the Carnegie Hall box office. For more information on the Tibet House, click over to their website.

Paul’s only son (with Linda McCartney) has now ditched the band to put out solo material.

Last Tuesday, Paul McCartney’s Kid released the five-track Available Light (via Clash Music). The EP features some songs he had been working on since 2009, as well as a cover of Neil Young’s “Old Man” (“Old man take a look at my life / I’m a lot like you were”). Heh.

McCartney’s old man produced the EP, of course, giving him access to Abbey Road Studios and studios in the United States.

Meet and watch James McCartney's new band.

In news we just feel obligated to report on, the son of Sir Paul McCartney, James, recently formed a group called The Light. McCartney will be playing guitar along with Bryan Johnson on drums and Charlie Turner on bass.

Both Johnson and Turner grew up in Allerton, the same area of Liverpool that Sir Paul spent his childhood and inspired many of his future hits. McCartney met his bandmates about a year ago after being introduced to each other by producer David Kahne.

The Light is said to be currently mixing its debut studio album at Hog Hill Studio in Sussex, though no additional details have been given. That said, McCartney did note that his father’s sounds won’t be the only thing influencing the band’s sound. “The music was inspired by The Beatles, Nirvana, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Radiohead and all good music,” explains McCartney. Talk about covering your bases.

For a preview, might we suggest scrolling down, where you’ll find footage from the band’s first ever U.S. performance. It went down as part of the David Lynch Foundation event in Fairfield, Iowa this past weekend.
