The Who’s Roger Daltrey performed “Young Man Blues” and sat down for an interview on the Thursday Night episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The interview was mostly dedicated to promoting his Teenage Cancer Trust charity, but the legendary singer did provide a status update on The Who (they’re on a “very long sabbatical”) and shared tales of the band’s late drummer, Keith Moon. Last night, late night TV was chock full of big name talent making their way to Coachella. Arctic Monkeys appeared on Conan, where they performed their new single, "R U Mine?". On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Shins showcased "Simple Song" and "The Rifle's Spiral" from their recently released LP, Port of Morrow. (They also took some time to film a Coachella survival guide.) Leslie Feist tackled Metals's "The Bad in Each Other" on Leno. And, over on Letterman, Alabama Shakes ripped through "Hold On" from their debut LP, Boys & Girls.
Thanks to the power of late-night TV, countless bands and singers have reached a population of music listeners they would’ve never been able to otherwise. Last night, New Orleans bounce queen Big Freedia joined that list of such acts when she made her grand debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing “Excuse” and “Nah Who Mad”. Backed by dancers right out of Stomp The Yard, Freedia, decked out in matching zebra pants and shirt, popped her way onto the stage before letting lose an auditory assault featuring his one-of-a-kind shouting/flow, a helpin’ of boomin’ bass, and uber jerky drum machines. More than just brining bounce to a wider audience, Freedia’s in-your-face approach and unrelenting pace made it seem as if all of the country had stumbled into an underground dive somewhere in the Garden District. Watch the replay below.

So much has changed. Merrill Garbus. Jimmy Kimmel. Bud Light banners. A year ago, few fans could have conjured up that image, but here we are in 2012 and an act like the tUnE-yArDs has attracted quite the following. Last night, Garbus & Co. delivered one of 2011′s best tracks, “Bizness”, all to perfection: horns, syncopated beats, neon makeup, you got it. Shortly after, they also chopped out another track, this time with “You Yes You”, which closed out the night. Wondering why we named ‘em one of our favorite live acts of the past year?
After surviving a recent bout with vampirism, My Morning Jacket braved the midnight hour again last night, though this time they tossed a rain check on any undead wakes. Instead, they hit up Jimmy Kimmel Live! to knock out two solid cuts off their latest LP, Circuital: “Outta My System” and “First Light”. By now, it’s obvious frontman and guitarist Jim James’ hair isn’t getting any shorter, and it had as much fun last night as he did, swallowing the air in all its Kentucky glory.
In September, bizarro rock trio Primus released their first album in 12 years, Green Naugahyde. Following a fairly intense North American tour that wrapped up just days ago, Les Claypool and company continue to run the promotional gauntlet, hitting up last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Unveiling the album track “Lee Van Cleef”, the band made their way through a performance that was everything one might expect from the odd outfit: energetic, a little weird (maybe even borderline off-putting for some folks), and, of course, an affair filled with tons of funky bass. Plus, attribute it to the grand setting of ABC or just the band being the wily veterans they are, but the threesome demonstrated so succinctly just how much subtle punch they have. Check out the video replay below.

The last time Jane’s Addiction graced late night television (in 2003), Conan O’Brien was cracking jokes on NBC, J-Fal was still a force on SNL, Jimmy Kimmel Live had just debuted, and David Letterman hadn’t quite transitioned into a creepy old man. But with the band’s fourth studio album, The Great Escape Artist, dropping in less than two weeks, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, and on-again, off-again bassist Chris Chaney took to Kimmel‘s outdoor stage to perform “Irresistible Force” last night. With the lights dimmed, and the crowd basking in a flood of lasers, Farrell seemed slightly subdued following such a late-night dry spell…until the song’s first chorus. Farrell’s energy was amplified by the pounding double-bass of Perkins and the straight-sexy guitar stylings of the legendary Navarro. If you missed it on tape delay, check out the video replay below.

Like a football team winning the Super Bowl or a cricket player winning whatever their championship game is, rap athlete J. But the work of a champion is never done, and Cole’s first bit of post-victory business was a visit to last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Below, you can watch Cole perform his Kanye-sampling single, “Work Out”.

These days, it’s slightly surreal seeing Blink-182 on-stage; sort of like flipping through your old high school yearbook over the holidays. Are we that old already, you might ask yourself again and again. Similar questions surfaced last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker punched in at ABC Studios. Supporting their new LP, Neighborhoods, the CA (former?) foul-mouthed trio rolled out new singles “Up All Night” and later “After Midnight”. Be forewarned: Gone are the absurd lyrics, instead replaced by edgier tones and slightly hoarse vocals. Don’t fret, though. It’s still washed over and wrung out and doused again with angst – flashing lights, notwithstanding.
Last night, folk-rock maestro Josh Ritter stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to play a scorching rendition of “Rattling Locks”, the fifth track off last year’s So Runs the World Away. The percussion-heavy and bluesy number is a thunderous piece of work, especially when Ritter is accompanied by the equally animated Royal City Band. In case you missed it, the video is above. Over the end credits of Kimmel, Ritter and company also played the energetic fan-favorite “Kathleen”, which you can check out below.

Ritter can be found on his seemingly never-ending tour (such as stops with the DMB Caravan) as well bookstores everywhere with his debut novel, Bright’s Passage. You know, the book that Stephen King said “shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime”. No big deal.

Lady Gaga brought her trademark mainstreamed, avant-garde style to Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night for an interview as well as a performance of tracks “You and I” and “The Edge of Glory”, off her latest LP Born This Way. The interview was surprisingly sporadic, topic-wise, with a large amount of time devoted to meat-curing, prosciutto, and flavoring pasta with cigarette butts which somehow transcends into drunken bowling. Hell, if anyone can do it, it’ll be Lady Gaga.

Got to admit, it's getting better.

Last week was incredible. From everyone’s favorite formerly little guys Fleet Foxes first showing off Helplessness Blues to vets Death Cab For Cutie introducing their new single to the late night community. And those were just two of many. Iron & Wine brought “Tree By The River” to Leno, TV on the Radio doing “Will Do”, and UK sensation Tinie Tempah making his US network television debut.

And I honestly thought last week was going to be the highest point for a while, but late night shows no signs of letting up. This week’s lineup is just as impressive as last’s, if not more so. Rick Ross’s label Maybach Music Group (MMG) which includes Wale and Stalley will be performing as a collective on Jimmy Kimmel. And typically we’d give the unique act card to them, but Jimmy Fallon’s booking managed to pull Stephen Still and Graham Nash to perform together. And to top it all off Bon Iver is bringing their first single to network television, which should be nothing short of fantastic. Equally fantastic should be the Suck It And See debut performance by Arctic Monkeys. Other highlights include The Cars (!), INXS, Big Sean, Tinie Tempah, The Vaccines, and MNDR.

Here’s your Late Night Lobotomy.

For nearly a decade, metal folklore had Rammstein banned in the United States, the result of a public indecency arrest and far too many onstage sex scenes. But after successfully conquering Madison Square Garden last fall, Germany’s version of The Beatles — at least in terms of popularity — recently embarked on a U.S. tour. Along the way, they were invited to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the clips from last night’s performance are the best things you’ll see all day. I promise.

Performing “Du Hast” and “Feuer Frei”, Rammstein brought their full arsenal of tricks to the broadcast. In fact, in the the four minutes it took to play “Du Hast”, frontman Till Lindemann managed to both breathe fire and light a roadie on fire, all while various fiery explosions went off in five-second intervals. Check out the videos below (via The Audio Perv).

Oh, and props on the booking, Kimmel. Now let’s get ‘em on Ellen.

A who's who of Late Night performers.

Oh, where to start? Last week, you say? Okay. Last week was awesome for three reasons: Okkervil River’s first televised showing since the release of their latest album, I Am Very Far, The Kills brought the house down, and Lauryn Hill did her best Bob Marley impression on Jimmy Fallon. Not bad right?

Well, things just get better and better in late night. This week is bursting at the seams with music – most of it good. We’re talking Fleet Foxes, Death Cab For Cutie, Iron & Wine, TV On The Radio, Ben Harper, Tinie Tempah, White Lies, and The Black Angels, to name a few. <content:mobile>Oh, where to start? Last week, you say? Okay. Last week was awesome for three reasons: Okkervil River's first televised showing since the release of their latest album, I Am Very Far, The Kills brought the house down, and Lauryn Hill did her best Bob Marley impression on Jimmy Fallon. Not bad right?

Well, things just get better and better in late night. This week is bursting at the seams with music - most of it good. We're talking Fleet Foxes, Death Cab For Cutie, Iron & Wine, TV On The Radio, Ben Harper, Tinie Tempah, White Lies, and The Black Angels, to name a few. Pepper a little Cee-Lo Green here, a little Head And The Heart there, and you've got yourself a lineup to be proud of.

Here's your Late Night Lobotomy.

Worth watching last week: Lupe Fiasco doing a very confident version of his Modest Mouse-sampling “The Show Goes On”, Moby schooling the world on how you shouldn’t put people in a box, and The Twilight Singers bringing it loud and sexy to Letterman. All in all, a pretty okay week. Not anything to write home about, but worth the seven minutes it will take to re-cap the highlights.

This week is, well, we won’t church it up; this week is sort of bland. The only real highlights being an outing from the ever-impressive Calexico, and the network television debut of Twin Shadow, which should be fun. But it happens! And there’s always next week. Oh! And before I forget, longtime CoS well-wishers Neon Trees would like to grace your ears with their one hit wonder on Letterman this week. So now you’re faced with a question: would you listen to a band that looks like this?
Quite a tapestry this week.

So, as a re-cap for last week, look no further than this video of The Strokes slaying their sublime Angles track, “Games”. I’ll be the first to admit, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from The Strokes after a five-year hiatus. But they came to play; that much is irrefutable. We will, however, open the forum to public debate on one particular subject. Julian with the slick, silky hat or Julian without the slick, silky hat?

Please take off that hat, Jules.

In other news, this week continues with a hodge podge of artists: everyone from OK Go to Buddy Guy. We’re particular excited for performances from Lupe Fiasco, Moby, and The Twilight Singers. Other notables include the Aretha Franklin, Alison Krauss, a double helping of The Airborne Toxic Event, and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Here’s your Late Night Lobotomy.

<content:mobile>So, as a re-cap for last week, look no further than this video of The Strokes slaying their sublime Angles track, "Games". I'll be the first to admit, I wasn't expecting a whole lot from The Strokes after a five-year hiatus.

We're particular excited for performances from Lupe Fiasco, Moby, and The Twilight Singers. Other notables include the Aretha Franklin, Alison Krauss, a double helping of The Airborne Toxic Event, and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Here's your Late Night Lobotomy.

Mon—Alter Bridge
Tues—Robbie Robertson
Wed—Augustana
Fri—The Airborne Toxic Event

Mon—Darius Rucker
Tues—Twisted Sister

It’s re-runs mostly, this week, folks. Don’t shoot the messenger. But there’s a silver lining! You get to catch up on last week, which very well may have been the best week in late night since I took over this column a year ago. I mean, really? Foo Fighters, TV On The Radio, Bright Eyes, Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey, The Kills, Wiz Khalifa, and Jenny and Johnny? Whew.

This week is a little easier to swallow, with really only one performance to pay attention to: The Strokes on Conan O’Brien. They’ve played a different song off their latest, Angles, on every late night appearance thus far, plus Conan is a fan of the band, so who knows what’s gonna happen. Also, Scala & Kolacny Brothers (who did that awesome version of “Creep” you saw in The Social Network‘s advertisements?) are visiting Conan, which should be interesting. Be sure and tune in.

Before last night, Lopez Tonight was perhaps best known for hosting the live hip hop debut of NBA All-Star Ron Artest. But now, Conan’s lead-out can tout the fact that the world’s most famous Prince appeared on his show and played three songs, including two brand new ones. Better yet, the guitar legend set aside his anti-YouTube ways and let Lopez put the performances up on the net.

Above, you can watch Prince play “Beautiful Ones”, off his iconic Purple Rain, and below are clips for the two new songs, titled “Laydown” and “You’re the One for Me”, respectively. As previously reported, the appearance came in support of Prince’s upcoming 21-night residency in Los Angeles, which begins tonight.

Elsewhere last night, The Kills — with Alison Mosshart’s crazy sex hair in tow — took to Conan to play “Satellite”, off the recently released Blood Pressure, and the poptastic Robyn offered live renditions of “Call Your Girlfriend” and “Dancing on My Own” on Kimmel. Before last night, Lopez Tonight was perhaps best known for hosting the live hip hop debut of NBA All-Star Ron Artest. But now, Conan's lead-out can tout the fact that the world's most famous Prince appeared on his show and played three songs, including two brand new ones. Better yet, the guitar legend set aside his anti-YouTube ways and let Lopez put the performances up on the net.

Above, you can watch Prince play "Beautiful Ones", off his iconic Purple Rain, and below are clips for the two new songs, titled "Laydown" and "You're the One for Me", respectively. As previously reported, the appearance came in support of Prince's upcoming 21-night residency in Los Angeles, which begins tonight.

Elsewhere last night, The Kills -- with Alison Mosshart's crazy sex hair in tow -- took to Conan to play "Satellite", off the recently released Blood Pressure, and the poptastic Robyn offered live renditions of "Call Your Girlfriend" and "Dancing on My Own" on Kimmel. Both performances can be re-watched below the Prince clips.
