Regardless of your political affiliation, I think it’s safe to say most of us like or can least appreciate the music and talents of Sir Paul McCartney. Last night was perfect example of this, as dignitaries and musicians from around the world gathered upon the White House to pay tribute to the former Beatle. President Obama awarded him with Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Son, an honor previously only given the likes of Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. Jack White, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Herbie Hancock, and the Jonas Brothers then showered the man with renditions of his various songs. White, for example, covered “Mother Nature’s Son”, while Grohl offered his take on the Wings classic “Band on the Run”.

If, upon reading the last few sentences, you’re now foaming at the mouth in anticipation of checking out video from the concert, you’re not alone — I’ve spent the last 45 minutes searching the Internet for ‘em. However, because the concert was filmed specifically for a July 28th telecast on PBS, there isn’t much out there. The best I could find is the following, a two-minute clip featuring a joint sing-a-long of “Hey Jude”. McCartney plays piano, while White, Grohl, Costello, and even Jerry Seinfeld and Obama sing alongside. It’s pretty incredible stuff, even if it’s only two minutes in length.

If anything else pops up between now and July 28th, we’ll surely post it. Of course, be sure to check back here on July 29th, because I can already tell you it’s going to be one epic news day.

Billboard has made its name keeping tabs on the most popular music through the years, and “top 40″ has become synonymous with “this music generally makes me puke.” Billboard.com has been posting another kind of top 40 list for the last four years, and this year’s might also make you puke if you’ve been feeling the effects of the current Great Recession. It’s “Music’s Top 40 Money Makers“, and some of the cream of the crop are absurd.

As one might expect in the era of dwindling CD sales, the top dogs are making money based on other endeavors. This year’s list “[comprises], among other variables, monies earned from CD and digital sales, publishing royalties and all forms of streaming,” according to the article. And of course tours. The top earner last year (it’s not even close, folks) was U2. With a whopping $108,601,283 made, U2′s figures reached almost twice as much as number two guy Bruce Springsteen. Bono and co. can thank — or pat themselves on the back for — the huge 360° tour for making them (and Africa) so wealthy. Other tours bringing in the dough: Madonna’s record-setting “Sticky & Sweet” tour, the Jonas Brothers’ world tour, Kenny Chesney’s tour (1 million tickets sold for seven consecutive years), and Metallica’s arena tour, which drew close to a million fans in 2009 (Guitar Hero: Metallica was good for some loose change, too). Metallica’s only 10th on the list but earned $25.5 million. Major labels may be irrelevant, but you can’t argue with these figures. Sheesh.

Other artists making the list include the late Michael Jackson, who sold truckloads of CD’s and ringtones; dutch violinst Andre Rieu on his 30th-anniversary tour; Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which has found a genius niche that is not likely to abandon the band anytime soon; and Leonard Cohen, who needed the money and apparently chose a reliable way to make it. The list also includes the names you expect to see there: Nickelback, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Beyonce. Not among 2009′s biggest earners: Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas, and Kanye West, despite being everywhere all the time.

Check out the full list here.

Lots of musicians like Barack Obama. Lots of musicians like Barack Obama so much so that they performed in support of him during his run for the White House. And now, unsurprisingly, a number of our favorite acts will soon be congregating in Washington, DC to celebrate Barack Obama’s victory.

According to Fox News, Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, and Bruce Springsteen are among the musicians who have been invited to perform on inauguration day, while The Dead, the Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus are head the acts rumored to be playing at any one of the official balls and events leading up to it.

If Springsteen does make an inauguration day appearance, it could be just one of many shows he will perform in Washington over the course of the week. In fact, according to The Washington Post, the Boss is already confirmed to perform a free show on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on January 18th.

Of course, like any good music extravaganza, one doesn’t have to be part of the official festivities to get in on the fun. For one, Elvis Costello and Sting are already confirmed to be playing the “unofficial” Creative Coalition inauguration ball, while Ted Leo and Andrew Bird lead the indie charged bill holding down the The Big Shoulders Ball at the Black Cat on January 19th.

Still not enough for you? Have we mentioned Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, George Clinton, The Temptations, Sam Moore, and Dionne Warwick are just some of the others expected to make an appearance at some point during the week? And even then, we’re still probably only scratching the surface…

If anything, Barack Obama’s inaguration will be bringing the music to the nation’s capital for at least one week. So if you weren’t lucky enough to score a ticket to the actual ceremony, sip the bubbly and take in one of these shows!
